Disney’s Mickey Mouse is Getting a Gundam (And It’s Glorious)

As a long-time enthusiast of both Gundam and Disney, I must say that the fusion of these two iconic universes has left me utterly spellbound! The Mickey Mouse Gundam, crafted by the legendary Kunio Okawara, is an unexpected yet exhilarating amalgamation of my childhood favorites.

For over four decades now, the Mobile Suit Gundam series has consistently introduced fresh narratives revolving around mechanical suits. While the initial universe serves as a foundation, it continues to be expanded with new tales, like the recent Netflix anime “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.” Moreover, new universes are frequently developed to ensure the mech genre maintains its staying power. Apart from original animated series, the Gundam universe is known for crossing over with other properties in both official and unofficial capacities. Interestingly, Disney has entered the fray as a Gundam designer has crafted a unique mechanical suit for Mickey Mouse, marking an exciting new chapter in the Gundam saga.

For many years, Mickey Mouse has served as Disney’s official mascot. However, a significant change occurred in 2024 when Steamboat Willie, the original version of Mickey Mouse, entered the public domain. After a certain period, fictional characters can escape copyright restrictions and become owned by the general public. Since Steamboat Willie debuted in 1928, creators are now able to produce stories about this character outside of Disney’s control. Consequently, horror movie makers are particularly excited about the prospect of reimagining the classic cartoon mouse in new and innovative ways.

The Mickey Mouse Gundam Arrives

Bandai Namco has unveiled a new toy where Mickey Mouse will don a mech suit, as part of their Tamashii Nation sub-brand. This particular mech was designed by Kunio Okawara, renowned for his work on the anime series VOTOMS and a significant figure in the Gundam universe. For those unaware, Okawara has contributed to the creation of many original Gundam mechs, including the first suit that sparked the franchise and the Zaku II.

Okawara not only unveiled the latest design but also discussed the process behind creating the Mickey Mouse mech called the “Chogokin Super Change Mickey Mouse” robot. He explained, “Since there are countless Mickey Mouse enthusiasts worldwide, I was cautious about altering his visual aesthetic. From the front, I aimed to maintain a resemblance to his original look, and I grew increasingly thrilled as ideas for his transformation came to mind.

Disney Anime?

Despite Mickey Mouse not having an official anime series produced before, Disney is gradually venturing into anime production through intriguing paths. For instance, the successful project “Star Wars: Visions” featured multiple seasons where various studios collaborated to develop unique narratives surrounding the Jedi and Sith. Although Disney has yet to produce anime series based on Marvel’s extensive superhero collection or any other films under its belt, there’s a possibility that such productions could surface in the future.

In terms of Gundam, the mechanical franchise has had quite a few unexpected collaborations in the past. One of the most astonishing partnerships occurred when Gundam crossed paths with Hello Kitty, not only providing fans with fresh, unusual mechs to acquire but also offering anime enthusiasts new videos featuring Sanrio’s iconic character battling against the original mech that sparked it all. Given that Mobile Suit: Gundam has consistently introduced numerous new mechs and stories to expand its narrative, it will be intriguing to see which other universes the anime franchise decides to join forces with in the future.
