Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Star Has a Frustrating Update on Possible Sequel

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has seen every Ghostbusters film multiple times and even hosted a few marathons with friends, I must say that my excitement for the franchise remains unparalleled. Having grown up watching the original movies and being captivated by their unique blend of humor, horror, and heart, I was elated when Sony announced the continuation of the story in 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Actress Carrie Coon, who plays Callie Spengler in the movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire“, mentioned that she hasn’t seen a script for a potential sequel yet. During an interview promoting her upcoming film “Lake George”, she was questioned about the future of the renowned horror-comedy franchise, and from her statements, it appears that a new chapter is just beginning to be worked on.

Coon mentioned during an interview with ComicBook that he hasn’t encountered a script yet. The humor often revolves around Callie being deceased due to alcoholism, returning as a bothersome spirit. However, he guesses that might not be the path they’re taking.

In March, the follow-up to 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, titled “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire“, hit the screens. It generated a global box office revenue of $201.9 million, matching the earnings of its predecessor. However, it’s worth noting that Afterlife had a lower production budget ($75 million) and debuted during the early stages of theater recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, some viewers perceived Frozen Empire as underperforming. Yet, director Gil Kenan has confirmed that there are more Ghostbusters movies planned for the future.

After the conclusion of “Frozen Empire”, the direction of the story remains uncertain, yet audiences can look forward to seeing more of Egon’s granddaughter, Phoebe Spengler, portrayed by McKenna Grace. Interestingly, Kenan and director Jason Reitman, who was also a co-writer and producer for “Frozen Empire”, have been referring to the latest films as the “Phoebe Spengler saga”. This suggests that Phoebe is pivotal to the filmmakers’ broader narrative vision. For them, these films are essentially about family, with Phoebe at the heart of it all.

Although Kenan is eager for new Ghostbusters movies, no official decision has been made regarding a Frozen Empire sequel. It’s uncertain if Sony plans to proceed with this project, given that the original film received mainly negative reviews and disappointing box office results. The success of Frozen Empire on Netflix during summer months doesn’t necessarily predict how a sequel would fare in cinemas, as many people may prefer watching it for free at home instead of paying for a theater ticket.

Despite being stored away for some time, the Ghostbusters franchise has managed to rake in over $1 billion worldwide, suggesting Sony might not want to let it gather dust any longer. The brand is still well-known, and if a new film receives positive feedback, it could yield substantial profits. Compared to Spider-Man and the latest Jumanji installment, Sony doesn’t have many other lucrative blockbusters in their arsenal. Given this situation, reviving the Ghostbusters franchise and seeing if Kenan and Reitman can create a compelling sequel to Phoebe’s story may be their most promising move.
