As a long-time admirer of Mike Tyson‘s indomitable spirit and resilience, witnessing his fight against Jake Paul was an emotional rollercoaster. On one hand, it was heartening to see Iron Mike step into the ring once more, despite the challenges he faced both in and out of the arena. But on the other hand, the outcome wasn’t exactly what we expected.
Mike Tyson and Jake Paul created quite a buzz for their highly anticipated match, but unfortunately, the fight itself didn’t live up to the hype. Despite Netflix providing an entertaining night of boxing, Paul vs Tyson didn’t exactly set the arena ablaze. It was later disclosed that Tyson had suffered from a knee injury prior to the bout, though he refused to acknowledge it as a factor in his loss. After the fight, Tyson took to social media to express gratitude for the opportunity to step into the ring one final time. In this post, he also opened up about some health challenges he faced earlier in the year, revealing that he had come close to death and required eight blood transfusions during that period. You can read his heartfelt message to fans here.
“Last night, though I technically lost, it was still a victory for me. I am grateful for the experience. There’s nothing I would change about getting back into the ring one last time. Tyson explained that he came close to death in June, required eight blood transfusions, and lost half his blood and 25 pounds in the hospital. However, he battled to recover and fight again, making his decision to step back into the ring a win.
It’s a unique and unmerited moment for me when my kids witness me going head-to-head with a skilled boxer nearly twice my age for eight rounds in the bustling Dallas Cowboys stadium. I’m grateful for this extraordinary experience, #PaulTyson
Originally scheduled for July 20th on Saturday, the game was later delayed due to Tyson experiencing an ulcer outbreak. Following this postponement, Tyson revealed that he faced significant health problems, requiring him to work extra hours to resume training and regain some of the 25 pounds he lost in the hospital.

When postponement was announced, Most Valuable Promotions put out a statement saying, “Both Mike and Jake have agreed it’s crucial for both athletes to have equal opportunities to prepare for this significant match and reach their best performance. The well-being of our athletes is paramount, and we endorse Mike’s decision to take the required time to ensure he can perform at his peak.
As the fight commenced, Tyson exhibited a strong aggression, throwing powerful punches. However, regrettably, his intensity diminished significantly in Round 2, and it largely disappeared in the subsequent rounds. In brief bursts, Tyson displayed more energy, but he couldn’t maintain that level for extended periods. The overall tally of punches landed was not impressive.
In the fight between Paul and Tyson, while Paul threw considerably more punches (278 versus Tyson’s 97), it’s the number of landed punches that tells a more compelling story. Out of Paul’s total punches, 78 actually hit Tyson, whereas only 19 of Tyson’s punches managed to connect with Paul. Despite several rounds where it seemed Tyson was barely throwing any punches, he endured 78 hits from Paul and remained relatively steady during the entire 8-round bout, showing signs of wobbliness in just two instances.
