Garden State Anniversary Concert Will Assemble Soundtrack’s Artist (But Not All Of Them)

As a movie buff who grew up in the early 2000s, I can tell you that the announcement of the 20th-anniversary concert of Garden State is nothing short of exhilarating! This iconic indie film soundtrack has been a part of my life since its release, and the thought of seeing these talented artists perform live at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre is simply too good to be true.

A significant indie film soundtrack from the classic movie “Garden State” is set for a live performance celebration in honor of its 20th anniversary, as announced by Zach Braff. This Grammy-winning collection will be brought to life on March 29, 2025, at LA’s Greek Theatre, although not all contributing artists have been confirmed to attend the event.

Twenty years have passed since my movie, “Garden State,” was released, and I never would have thought that both the film and its soundtrack would continue to touch people’s hearts two decades later, as Braff shared in a promotional video. This sparked an idea: what if we gathered the talented musicians from the “Garden State” soundtrack for a live performance on stage for the very first time? And the best part is, it’s all for a worthy cause!

The finalized list of artists set to perform boasts a stellar lineup drawn from the original soundtrack, such as The Shins, Iron & Wine, Frou Frou (with Imogen Heap), Colin Hay, Thievery Corporation, Remy Zero, Cary Brothers, Bonnie Somerville, and Sophie Barker from Zero 7. However, Deadline reports that Coldplay, who were part of the original album, will not be performing. Unfortunately, any performance by the late Nick Drake, another soundtrack artist, is out of the question as he passed away half a century ago.

The upcoming concert aims to aid The Midnight Mission, an organization that assists homeless individuals by blending nostalgia with charitable donations. Notably, this soundtrack’s influence transcends its commercial accomplishments, as it played a crucial role in exposing a generation of movie enthusiasts to independent music and showcasing the powerful effect of skillfully chosen licensed tunes in filmmaking.

In 2004, a film titled “Garden State” was created by director-writer Braff during his period of fame from the show “Scrubs.” This movie tells the story of Andrew Largeman, a 26-year-old actor and waiter, who goes back to New Jersey following his mother’s demise. The film, which bears some resemblance to Braff’s own life experiences, was filmed in South Orange, where he grew up. Notable actors like Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ian Holm, Jean Smart, Armando Riesco, Jackie Hoffman, Method Man, Denis O’Hare, Jim Parsons, and Ann Dowd were part of the cast for this production.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but emphasize that music took center stage in shaping the emotional terrain of the movie. I, personally, chose tracks that mirrored my creative ideals, weaving them seamlessly into the film’s fabric. My love for music was also vividly portrayed in Scrubs, where Colin Hay, a musician who graced the soundtrack of my film, made numerous appearances, performing various songs.

Though the gathering is advertised as featuring “special guests,” there’s ongoing conjecture regarding possible appearances by Braff and Portman, as their potential attendance could elevate the excitement surrounding the honoring of this significant cultural artifact even further.

At present, you can secure tickets for this unique, one-time event via the Greek Theatre’s official site and also through Ticketmaster.
