She clarified, “Your elders make the decisions about your life’s path until you turn 21. My father informed me that they won’t permit me to become a school teacher anymore, as the pay isn’t sufficient.
Furthermore, Hershberger expressed, “I was growing weary of everyone constantly instructing me on what clothing to don, how to style it, and the manner in which to wear it.
Fortunately, it was Joseph, Hershberger’s elder sibling who had departed from the Amish community before, that could extend his aid to her.
She mentioned that she had $24 with her when she departed. Without the help of her brother, she admitted she wouldn’t have managed, as he not only purchased her phone but also covered all expenses, and never demanded reimbursement in return.
As an ardent enthusiast, I must confess that stepping into a world unfamiliar to me – the non-Amish society – proved quite the uphill battle for dear Hershberger. The main hurdle was the lack of essential documents required for gainful employment, which left her in a precarious position.
To obtain my learner’s permit, I first had to secure my Social Security card and birth certificate, as my parents kept these important documents locked away until we either got married or turned 21. She mentioned that the process of acquiring these documents can be lengthy. Essentially, they serve as proof of one’s identity as a genuine individual.
Before starting her video-making and editing journey on social media, Joseph’s future spouse assisted Hershberger in securing a home-cleaning job position.
Following the popularity of her video titled “I’m not just a bitch, I’m a bitch with a backstory,” which garnered over 9.6 million views and 1.2 million likes, Hershberger started consistently posting on TikTok, sharing insights about her Amish background. Her content is a mix of humor and education as she addresses various viewer inquiries regarding the Amish way of life and also publishes cooking videos.
Initially, folks began inquiring about various topics… I found myself responding, and it turned out they enjoyed it immensely. I thought to myself, “Well, this is pleasant! I genuinely relish engaging in conversation and providing answers that others appreciate. So, I’ve decided to continue down this path.
She has taken on a new job editing the “Amish Rebel” podcast alongside her uncle, who shares similar experiences from their former Amish community. Lately, she tied the knot with Eli, a person she encountered within a shared living setup designed for individuals transitioning out of Amish societies.
In August, the couple got married, but neither family decided to show up for the wedding ceremonies that they had been invited to.
Hershberger emphasized that her efforts to reconcile with her family aren’t effortless or straightforward, stating, “It’s not all plain sailing. There’s a barrier between us due to my past actions. They believe I’m disrespecting them and disagree with the way I choose to live.
