As a seasoned analyst with decades of experience in the tech industry, I’ve seen my fair share of gaming monitor launches. The latest addition to the high-speed PC gaming monitors family is LG’s UltraGear GX7, boasting a 480Hz refresh rate and a QHD resolution. While it might seem like an extravagant purchase for most gamers, it’s a dream come true for competitive players who demand the best performance.
The realm of fast-paced computer gaming monitors has expanded a bit more, as LG unveiled their UltraGear GX7 for preorder. This new monitor can be reserved now at LG’s official site for $999.99. The preorder phase ends on December 25, 2024, and the company anticipates shipping of the monitor to begin during the week of December 30.
Only a small number of OLED monitors can achieve an impressive 480Hz refresh rate, and the GX7 is among them, joining the ranks of monitors such as the Sony InZone M10S and the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDP that were released earlier this year.
The LG GX7 features a WOLED (White Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen, measuring 26.5 inches with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (Quad High Definition). The “W” in the OLED label isn’t merely for aesthetics; it allows the panel to produce vibrant RGB colors and high screen brightness due to its white light source. Additionally, this display earns VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification and boasts the top-tier VESA ClearMR rating of 13000.
Featuring AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility, as well as the most recent HDMI and DisplayPort technologies, this product is likely to be highly sought after by avid gamers eager to flaunt their top-tier gaming hardware. Indeed, its 480Hz refresh rate and lightning-fast 0.03ms response time make it an ideal match for competitive gamers striving for perfection.
LG’s GX7 isn’t the only 480Hz OLED monitor on the market
It wasn’t until about ten months later that the panel technology unveiled by LG in their GX7 at CES 2024 found its way into one of their own monitors. During this gap, both Sony and ASUS have introduced comparable monitors incorporating LG’s technology.
Let’s examine the specifications of the UltraGear GX7 side by side with the Sony InZone M10S and ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDP for a comprehensive comparison.
It’s not unexpected that the fundamental features remain similar across these monitors, given they all share LG’s WOLED technology as their foundation.
Although the ASUS monitor appears to have a higher brightness when HDR is turned off, it utilizes an older DisplayPort 1.4 standard. The primary distinctions between 1.4 and 2.1 versions lie in significantly increased bandwidth and added encoding efficiency. Essentially, this means that the 2.1 version provides better compatibility for high-end graphics cards.
From a design standpoint, LG’s UltraGear GX7 seems to be a nice middle ground between Sony’s stripped-back stand and the ASUS ROG’s more aggressive forked stand. All monitors can be VESA-mounted.
Sony’s monitor stands out as the priciest option, retailing at approximately $1,100. LG and ASUS monitors, on the other hand, are positioned within the $999.99 price tier, making them slightly more budget-friendly compared to the Sony model. However, they all fall under the premium price category.
Do you really need a 480Hz monitor?
Spending over $1,000 on a 480Hz refresh rate OLED monitor is usually not feasible for many gamers, as such high-end devices like the LG GX7 are primarily for gaming enthusiasts and professionals. The advantage of a higher refresh rate, combined with an OLED panel’s excellent color reproduction and contrast, makes it a superior choice for these groups due to its ability to provide a more seamless and immersive gaming experience.
Instead of going for monitors such as the GX7, which are quite enticing, I’d suggest that most gamers consider the ASUS PG27AQDM OLED monitor, approximately priced at $700. This model boasts a 1440p OLED panel with a swift 240Hz refresh rate, lightning-fast 0.03ms response time, and nearly all (99%) of the DCI-P3 color spectrum. The OLED technology ensures brilliant colors, while the 240Hz refresh rate should suffice for most gamers’ needs.
The Alienware AW2725DF is typically sold at a price of $700, the same as you’d find elsewhere. It boosts its refresh rate to an impressive 360Hz with a resolution of 1440p, making it one of the top-tier gaming monitors around today. If you’re looking to save some cash, consider the Xioami G Pro monitor instead. This model offers a 180Hz refresh rate for its mini-LED panel and usually retails at approximately $370.
