Kevin Smith Confirms He’s Developing a Sequel to His Most Controversial Movie

As a seasoned cinephile who has been following the evolution of indie cinema since its inception, I must admit that the news of a sequel to Kevin Smith‘s iconic 1999 comedy “Dogma” has left me both exhilarated and apprehensive. Having grown up with the film and resonating deeply with its blend of humor, spirituality, and unapologetic irreverence, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with curiosity about how this belated sequel will fare.

On Sunday, during the Vulture Festival, filmmaker Kevin Smith disclosed plans for a sequel to his 1999 comedy “Dogma”. According to him, stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will reprise their roles, although these may be in minor parts or brief appearances. Smith also dismissed worries among fans about how a late-in-the-game sequel might affect the film’s or his own legacy.

Smith stated, “Some might caution, ‘Keep your hands off! You’ll mess it up.’ But let me assure you, I am eager to do just that – I’m delighted and I’ve found a way.” Dogma is Smith’s fourth film as a writer-director, reflecting his upbringing as a practicing Catholic. In this film, Affleck and Damon portray fallen angels Bartleby and Loki, who were cast out from Heaven for disobedience. They believe they can regain entry to heaven through a technicality in Catholic theology.

Humble as always, Smith shared with the audience his belief that Affleck and Damon appeared in his film due to unacknowledged assistance he provided on their 1997 movie “Good Will Hunting”, and neither thanked him during their Oscar acceptance speeches. He playfully added: “I’ve been able to use this against them for a quarter-century, which is why they keep appearing in every film. Look forward to their presence — not just a cameo, but more than that. The only way we can make a Dogma sequel is if they’re involved. So don’t be surprised when you see those guys there.

The stellar lineup for the movie Dogma featured Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Alanis Morissette, as well as George Carlin and Alan Rickman. Notably, several frequent characters from Smith’s films were also part of the cast. Among them were Jay and Silent Bob, portrayed by Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, and himself.

Dogma Anniversary

Over the weekend, the movie “Dogma” marked its 25th anniversary by having a limited theater screening. As reported by Smith, the rights to the film have been bought by a new distributor from Miramax, which could mean that “Dogma” will be accessible for streaming for the very first time in its history.

On various occasions, Smith has mentioned the possibility of a follow-up to “Dogma,” but past endeavors never came to fruition. With this being an entirely fresh venture, specifics are scarce at the moment, and there’s no indication as to when production might start or when it will be shown.
