As a die-hard MonsterVerse enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement for Season 2 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” Having grown up with Godzilla and King Kong movies, I’ve always yearned for more intricate lore surrounding these titans. The fact that the show is moving to Skull Island, King Kong’s home, is a dream come true!
The series titled “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” immersed fans further into the mythos of Legendary’s MonsterVerse with its first season, focusing on siblings Cate and Kentaro Randa as they pursued information regarding their father Hiroshi, a search that took them through the annals of Titans and MUTOs. The Apple TV+ program proved popular, and given the success of this series along with the box office earnings from Godzilla and King Kong films, the show has been renewed for another season. A mysterious teaser image from Apple TV’s X account hints at the upcoming season’s new location: Skull Island, home to King Kong.
The image displays two battered Monarch Jeeps, accompanied by a lush, thick jungle in the background, serving as an ominous backdrop. Previously, we learned that the setting for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 would be shifted to Skull Island. This is, however, the initial picture taken from the production set of this popular television series. Given the success of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, it seems logical to emphasize the King Kong aspect of the MonsterVerse. After all, compared to the extensive Godzilla backstory, there is relatively little known about the Kong side of the universe within the MonsterVerse. By setting Monarch‘s second season on Skull Island, the show will have an opportunity to expand and enrich this aspect.
In its second season, Monarch is also experiencing other modifications. Actress Amber Midthunder from the series Prey has joined the cast, portraying Isabel, a strong-willed businesswoman. The rise of the MonsterVerse occurs at an intriguing moment in kaiju movie history. The release of Godzilla Minus One in 2024 captivated audiences with its heartfelt narratives that still delivered the high-octane action fans desired. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire further developed the MonsterVerse, introducing new concepts, even though it did not receive the same critical acclaim as Godzilla Minus One, its commercial success and enduring popularity suggest that kaijus are here to remain a significant part of cinematic history.
In addition to the excursion to Skull Island in Season 2, it’s been announced that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will also be getting a spin-off series. The details about this new series are still scarce, but it’s worth noting that Chris Black, the showrunner for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, will pen the script for the first episode of this spin-off. Having one creative mind guiding both shows seems like a smart move.
The second season of “Monarch: Saga of Beasts” is being made right now, but the exact launch date isn’t known just yet. However, many anticipate that it might come out sometime in 2025.
