We Never Learn Creator Returns to Shonen Jump With Brand-New Manga (& It’s Totally Different)

As a seasoned gamer and manga enthusiast with over two decades under my belt, I must say that Taishi Tsutsui’s latest offering, Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery, has piqued my interest in ways that few new series have managed to do recently. Having followed the enchanting journey of Nariyuki Yuiga and his romantic escapades in We Never Learn: Bokuben, I was intrigued to see Tsutsui venture into uncharted territories – the realm of thrillers and mysteries.

The creator behind the “We Never Learn: Bokuben” series, Taishi Tsutsui, has come back to Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine with a fresh manga, and it’s unlike any romantic comedy we’ve seen from them before. Previously, “We Never Learn: Bokuben” concluded its run in the magazine in 2020, but it took an unusual route to reach its final chapter. Unlike other romantic comedies in the magazine, this series showcased various endings for Nariyuki Yuiga’s potential love interests, ensuring that no character or fan would be left unsatisfied by the ending.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement over Tsutsui’s fresh venture into the realm of thrillers and mysteries! His signature blend of romantic comedy is now reimagined in an unprecedented way with the introduction of a captivating new series titled “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery” published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine (available here). This intriguing storyline incorporates romantic comedy elements, but it promises to be an entirely unique experience compared to Tsutsui’s past works. With its novel setting, time period, and humorously complex characters, it seems destined to offer a distinct and exhilarating take on the genres of thrillers and mysteries.

What Is Syd Craft?

In “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery,” readers are introduced to Syd Craft, a detective by profession but at heart, a romantic soul raised by detectives. Despite his upbringing, Syd’s true passion lies not in solving mysteries, but in pursuing love and finding his perfect match. To conceal this secret affection for romance novels from others, he presents himself as the stoic detective.

It’s just that while he has no real interest in being a detective, cases just sort of fall into his lap. Murders or serious crimes happen around him, and his observational skills end up helping to solve these cases despite his not wanting to be a part of them. Like how in this first chapter, a woman he’s interested in turns out to be a murderer and he’s forced to solve her case despite the fact that he’d rather go on a date instead. All the while, he has two women around him who are closer than he thinks but it’s a comedy of errors that will likely keep them a part from one another for a long time.

Is This Going to Be Shonen Jump’s Next Big Hit?

Assessing whether this new romantic comedy will be a major success in Shonen Jump based on just one chapter might be challenging, but it certainly offers something fresh. In recent years, we’ve noticed an uptick in romance series, fueled by the phenomenal success of titles like “Blue Box” and “Witch Watch.” Series like Genki Ono’s “Hima-Ten!” could have caught fans’ attention with their early buzz. It seems that Shonen Jump might be moving towards featuring more romantic comedies, and “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery” appears to meet that demand perfectly.

There’s potential for this series, Syd Craft, to maintain a long run if Tsutsui can consistently provide the quirky romance similar to We Never Learn: Bokuben. The initial chapter sets up an entertaining scenario that could be further developed in subsequent chapters. However, it needs time to prove itself and avoid being canceled unexpectedly by Shueisha within a few months.
