As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for uncovering the hidden gems of storytelling, I found myself deeply moved by the resurgence of heritage crafts and the plight of our dwindling traditional trades. Growing up in a world where the humble blacksmith was often overshadowed by the glamour of the silver screen, I never imagined that the rhythmic clang of a hammer against an anvil would one day resonate so profoundly within me.
When you picture a blacksmith, a brawny-looking bloke hammering away at an anvil might spring to mind. The reality, however, is rather different. There has been a resurgence of interest in heritage crafts since lockdown, particularly among young people.
Modern life offers swift satisfaction, as many items are just a finger-tap away via smartphones, even without leaving the comfort of your sofa. However, this convenience might leave individuals feeling somewhat unmoored and disoriented.
Creating items by hand can help satisfy a deeper, spiritual longing. It often provides a tremendous feeling of fulfillment. Typically, crafts call for patience, dedication, and concentration. They stand in stark contrast to the hurried pace of today’s fast-moving society.
And yet, despite this burgeoning interest, with videos of people making ceramics or jewellery notching up millions of views on Instagram or TikTok, so many of our wonderful heritage crafts are now under threat.
Some might argue that it’s just the march of history, why not let some of them go extinct?
It would truly be a pity if these traditional crafts were lost. There’s nothing quite as special as something handmade. They carry more than just utility; they embody value and transcend their purpose. They are also an integral part of our shared history. For instance, consider the making of kilts or hand-sewn cricket balls. As per this year’s report by the Heritage Crafts Association, these crafts are either “critically endangered” or “extinct” in the UK.
One compelling reason I advocate for is ensuring that traditional crafts don’t fade away, and teaching them in schools could be a solution. With the current administration initiating a revision of the national curriculum, now seems like the ideal moment to tackle this issue.
In the near future, artificial intelligence (AI) could pose a significant risk to numerous jobs. However, professions requiring physical skill and dexterity may experience increased demand since they are less likely to be automated or taken over by AI.
It’s equally valid to acknowledge that academics may not be suitable for everyone, as there are diverse talents among individuals. By excluding practical skills from the learning environment, we fail to identify and nurture these abilities, thereby hindering their growth and potential realization.
Beyond acquiring the skill to create items, mastering a craft fosters self-reliance, focus, perseverance, and the knack for completing projects – skills that prove useful in various professions. Moreover, it offers individuals a chance to discover an enduring passion that could bring them long-term satisfaction and joy. The benefits of this experience are priceless.
Modern cities are brimming with historic structures in need of renovation. In the upcoming season of Master Crafters: the New Generation, I explore Salisbury Cathedral, a site currently undertaking a restoration project for its ornate, intricately carved cloisters. Such work demands the expertise of stonemasons proficient in traditional medieval stone carving methods.
Glance at the churches or public buildings situated in numerous town and city centers. The tool marks etched into the stonework are evident, offering opportunities for learning craftsmanship to anyone interested.
“One reason I’m returning with Master Crafters is to delve into blacksmithing, letterpress printing, mosaics, and stone carving this time around. My greatest aspiration is that viewers will feel inspired, thinking, ‘I want to learn this. Is there a way to study it? Could it be a career choice for me?’
I gave everything a go and found joy in each one. Letterpress printing has a soothing, meditative quality to it, while pottery hasn’t been my forte yet, but drawing wildlife has become incredibly rewarding. Throughout history, humans have consistently created things, and it’s essential that we maintain our link to the past.
