2022 saw whispers about FromSoftware potentially being acquired by Sony. Now, reports suggest that Sony could be negotiating to buy Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware. According to a recent report by Reuters, this is based on information from two sources who say the discussions are still ongoing. If successful, the deal might be finalized in the coming weeks.
Although Sony hasn’t responded to the report, Kadokawa has stated that they are unable to provide any comments. It’s important to note that Sony currently holds a 1.93% stake in Kadokawa, following their capital alliance in February 2021. In August 2022, Kadokawa issued new shares for FromSoftware, with Tencent acquiring 16.25% through Sixjoy Hong Kong and Sony receiving 14.09%.
SoftBank-owned FromSoftware is renowned for their critically acclaimed action RPG games such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Their latest release, Elden Ring, has been a massive success with over 25 million copies sold since launch, while its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, reached five million sales within its first month.
