As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I find myself excitedly anticipating the unfolding saga of the DCU. Having grown up on a steady diet of comic book movies and shows, I can confidently say that James Gunn‘s confirmation of Peacemaker’s canon status in the new universe is a significant milestone.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement as we dive headfirst into the DC Universe with the launch of “Creature Commandos”. But here’s the real scoop: James Gunn has confirmed that the first season of “Peacemaker” will be part of this new universe! Well, almost. So, buckle up and get ready for an epic ride as we explore these familiar yet slightly altered DC worlds.
During an interview with IGN, Gunn clarified that the events of John Cena’s Peacemaker series are indeed part of the DC Universe’s ongoing storyline. This isn’t too shocking, given the context.
Initially, Gunn is managing the creation of Season 2 of “Peacemaker” within the DCU, which means that the first season had to align with the universe’s continuity. Additionally, the trailer for “Creature Commandos” suggests that Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) is now employing monsters as soldiers due to restrictions on using humans, a development likely stemming from Waller’s secrets being exposed after her daughter, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), disclosed information to the media at the end of “Peacemaker” Season 1.
Even though Gunn’s comments made Peacemaker an official part of the DC Universe, they also created a fresh set of challenges. This is because the co-head of DC Studios announced that the Justice League cameo would be removed from the timeline and instead, Season 2 will tackle this alteration head-on.
How Can Season 2 of Peacemaker Erase the Justice League Cameo?
Following Peacemaker and his crew successfully halting the Butterflies’ onslaught, it turns out that the Justice League arrived too late to offer assistance. The humor lies in the fact that Earth’s strongest champions were not summoned quickly enough, allowing lesser crime-fighters ample time to handle the extraterrestrial debris. Given that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash no longer belong to the DCU, this sequence is now non-canonical. This leaves us pondering how Season 2 might reconcile this discrepancy, eliminate the cameo, and maintain logical continuity.
From our perspective, Gunn has three possible routes to take. The complex option is to incorporate a multiverse shift in Season 2 of Peacemaker, which would transport its main character to a different timeline where everything except for that specific scene occurred. This could potentially create confusion among viewers who aren’t invested in the leadership change at DC Studios when Gunn and Peter Safran took over.
An alternative scenario is that Gunn may decide to re-shoot certain scenes, using actors who have already been cast within the DC Universe. Instead of Miller’s Flash, it could be David Corenswet who takes on the role of Superman in this cameo. Additionally, there’s a possibility that less prominent characters like Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner or Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho might appear as well.
A straightforward method for handling this could be to have Peacemaker summarize the Season 1 events, only to be interrupted by another character who clarifies that the cameo was fictitious. It’s just a joke John often tells to boost his ego, implying he fabricated the story about standing up against the Justice League, a powerful team. This approach maintains the show’s humorous atmosphere while effectively rewriting a specific scene.
Significantly, if the rest of “Peacemaker” is considered canon, Gunn unintentionally verifies the existence of various heroes and villains in the DCU that were mentioned throughout the series. This includes quirky characters like Bat-Mite, Doll Man, Matter-Eater Lad, and Kite-Man (Yippee!). We’re eagerly anticipating how it all fits together.
The animated series titled “Creature Commandos” is set to debut on Max on the 5th of December. On the other hand, the second season of “Peacemaker” has been slated for a release in August 2025.
