As a seasoned gamer and long-time Star Wars enthusiast with memories of watching Luke Skywalker’s adventures unfold on the big screen for the very first time, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming release of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” The fact that this series focuses on the suburban experiences of children within the Star Wars universe is a refreshing take on a saga that has captivated generations.
The upcoming series titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” follows the storyline after “Star Wars: The Acolyte“. Unlike other Star Wars productions, this one explores the everyday life of children in the Star Wars universe. Although child characters have been a part of the franchise for some time, particularly with the growth of Han and Leia’s children in the old Legends canon, “Skeleton Crew” uniquely centers around a group of suburban kids. In a recent conversation with ComicBook, the young cast members – Ravi Conyer, Kyriana Kratter, Robert T. Smith, and Ryan K. Armstrong – shared the movies they watched to prepare for their roles: “Goonies“, “E.T.“, and “Stand by Me“, but not any Star Wars films.
Jon Watts encouraged them to watch ‘The Goonies’ and ‘E.T.’, and these viewings were among several shared experiences for the cast members. They also enjoyed bowling sessions and playing ‘Mario Cart’. Armstrong added that she watched ‘Stand by Me’ too. Despite their lack of guidance to watch any ‘Star Wars’ movies, they often discussed their preferred films from the original trilogy. Surprisingly, none of them selected ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, instead opting for Conyers, Kratter, and Smith favoring it, while Armstrong chose ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. Interestingly, Smith’s favorite scene doesn’t actually appear in ‘A New Hope’, but rather in ‘Return of the Jedi.’
Smith stated, “My dad and I both consider our favorite Star Wars moment of all time to be from Return of the Jedi. It’s the part where Luke Skywalker is made to walk on a plank over the Great Pit of Carkoon and then jumps up to grab his lightsaber – it’s just incredible.
The upcoming project Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is intended to stand out from other Star Wars productions, as evident by the movies it draws inspiration from. Films like The Goonies, E.T., and Stand by Me are renowned for their authentic portrayal of children’s interactions and their responses to unforeseen circumstances. Some Star Wars fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of inspiration drawn from the original films by modern actors, but constantly drawing on the same source can lead to a repetitive product. In contrast, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew aspires to be anything but repetitive, with a diverse team of directors and crew on board to broaden the universe of the galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres on December 3rd on Disney+.
