As a longtime fan of Remedy Entertainment and their exceptional storytelling, I am nothing short of impressed by their ability to consistently create high-quality titles on budgets that are a fraction of what we’ve come to expect from the AAA industry. The upcoming Control 2 and its companion spinoff, FBC: Firebreak, are prime examples of this.

View Urgent ForecastCurrently, escalating production costs are a significant challenge faced by the AAA game industry. However, some developers have discovered methods for creating top-tier games at relatively affordable prices. Remedy Entertainment is one of these studios known for such achievements, and it appears they aim to repeat this feat with their upcoming title, Control 2.
At a recent Capital Day Markets 2024 event, Remedy Entertainment announced the development of Control 2, which is expected to cost approximately €50 million. The studio stated that, as an action RPG, the sequel needs to sell around 3-4 million copies for Remedy to recoup its investment. For comparison, the original Control has sold over 4.5 million units. It’s important to note that Control 2 is being funded jointly by Annapurna Interactive.
In the meantime, we’re looking forward to the spinoff of Firebreak, part of the Alan Wake franchise by Remedy. Previously categorized as a mid-range title, it seems that this game has been developed with an estimated budget of approximately €30 million. The studio aims to recoup their investment by selling around 3 million copies. It will be intriguing to observe whether the game manages to meet those sales targets, especially considering it will be free for PlayStation Plus and Game Pass subscribers.
Regardless of the titles mentioned, it’s clear that many games in the AAA industry have had substantially higher production budgets than what we see in the examples given. Titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part 2, Horizon Forbidden West, The Callisto Protocol, and Immortals of Aveum all fall into this category, with budgets ranging from $125 million to $315 million. However, it’s important to note that these figures do not account for marketing costs.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but marvel at how Remedy Entertainment consistently manages to deliver top-notch gaming experiences without breaking the bank. While industry standards might suggest a higher budget, their productions such as Control and the highly anticipated Alan Wake 2 are arguably some of the finest games released in the last decade, proving that quality isn’t always tied to cost.
