Fans have been buzzing with excitement over the upcoming collaboration, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto, merging two legendary series in a crossover by IDW Publishing and Viz Media. One of the joys of this project lies in witnessing how Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello engage with Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, as well as observing their teamwork and the challenges they’ll encounter. The debut issue drops on Wednesday, giving us a glimpse into the unique assignment that Naruto‘s Team 7 has been given.
Publishers IDW unveiled a sneak peek of the first issue of the crossover series titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto, penned by Caleb Goellner, Hendry Prasetya, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire. This glimpse plunges readers into New York City, where Kakashi Hatake is perusing a scroll outlining the mission for Team 7. The current Fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village, Lady Tsunade Senju, assigns this B-ranked escort mission to ensure that April O’Neil safely returns to her village in the Big Apple. Additionally, readers are provided with a summary of the characters within Team 7, showcasing their personalities and combat skills.

In the upcoming story, April unveils her focus on groundbreaking science and seeks advice from the local ninja biology specialist. It turns out this role is filled by Baxter Stockman, a former university member expelled for misusing resources during his biological experiments. Stockman intends to apply his ooze formula to manufacture an army of genetically enhanced soldiers, half-human and half-animal. As Naruto and Sasuke weigh the potential risks of such hybridization, they’re suddenly disrupted by the Foot Clan who have arrived to kidnap April O’Neil. Although we don’t catch a glimpse of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this sneak peek, it hints at the upcoming encounter with the Naruto characters, which will unfold fully in the main issue.
TMNT x Naruto writer reveals how they prepared for the crossover
ComicBook spoke to writer Caleb Goellner about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto and the prep work that went into getting familiar with both franchises. “Research is always key when you’re writing for established characters, so I re-read a ton of the Naruto manga – not only the early Team 7 adventures, which loosely feed into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto miniseries, but also the Shippuden era,” Goellner said. “Early in the pitching stage, I wanted to figure out as many potential story scenarios as possible to give all of the project stakeholders flexibility, so I re-watched several Naruto movies and sat my OG 2003 Bandai Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi figures on my desk as faux totems of power.”
In an initial assessment of the first issue of the crossover titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto“, ComicBook rated it 4 out of 5, describing it as “a heap of ninja excitement, introducing fresh ideas and a previously unforeseen universe,” further recommending it to fans of either series if they’re curious about the quality of this miniseries.
