  • Developer Remedy Entertainment shared some updates on its project pipeline in a Capital Markets Day event.
  • Remedy revealed that its 2023 survival-horror game Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.8 million copies.
  • Remedy also shared that the upcoming Control 2 will be an action-RPG, and that it needs to sell between 3 to 4 million copies in its lifetime to recoup its costs.

As a seasoned gamer and researcher with decades of experience under my belt, I find Remedy Entertainment’s strategic moves intriguing. Their decision to self-publish their upcoming titles showcases their confidence and ambition, a trait that resonates deeply with me as I’ve seen countless studios rise and fall in the industry.

We’ve got a better idea of where one of the most unique studios in the gaming industry is headed.

At the Capital Markets Day 2024 event, Remedy Entertainment unveiled a detailed outline of its company strategy. In this presentation, it was announced that Control 2 would be classified as an action role-playing game (RPG), representing a change in genre from their previous works. Although the initial Control release (from 2019) offered players the chance to enhance abilities and engage in optional missions, it remained primarily an action-adventure game.

It’s been disclosed that the survival-horror game Alan Wake 2, produced by Remedy, has surpassed sales of 1.8 million copies. Although Remedy acknowledges that being exclusively available on the Epic Games Store initially might have limited the game’s earning potential and Alan Wake 2 is not yet generating a profit, they still stand firm in their belief that this decision was appropriate.

As a tech enthusiast, I can confidently say that, in my honest opinion, the game wouldn’t have reached its current masterpiece status without the backing of Epic Games.

Remedy is all-in on self-publishing

Looking ahead, Remedy Entertainment is self-publishing a number of its upcoming games.

Additionally, this encompasses Control 2 and the cooperative spin-off game FBC: Firebreak, where three players collaborate to halt intrusions into The Oldest House. FBC: Firebreak is scheduled for release in 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5, and will be accessible day one via Xbox Game Pass.

According to Remedy’s CFO, Santtu Kallionpää, it is realistic for the company to sell approximately 3-4 million copies of Control 2 and around 3 million copies of Firebreak in order to fully recoup their investment.

The second installment is yet to announce its launch date, suggesting that it might come out post-Firebreak and possibly as late as 2026. However, further details are needed for confirmation.
