As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has been through countless console generations, I must say that this latest update for the PS Portal is nothing short of exhilarating! Sony has always been at the forefront of innovation, and the addition of Cloud Streaming functionality to the PS Portal takes it to new heights.
Today, Sony is rolling out an extensive upgrade for its PlayStation Portable device, the PS Portal, which promises to enhance its capabilities beyond what was initially expected. A year ago, Sony started marketing the PS Portal as a means to rival devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck more effectively. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many PS5 users choosing to add this accessory to their setup. In an effort to further optimize the hardware, Sony is introducing a highly anticipated feature in the latest update.
Coming up soon, an update for PlayStation Portal is set to be released, with the main highlight being the addition of Cloud Streaming. This functionality, currently available in beta by Sony, can be accessed by users who choose to participate in the testing phase. Once implemented, gamers will have the ability to stream over 120 games from their PS5 directly onto the PlayStation Portal platform.

The primary drawback of the latest feature in PlayStation Portal is that cloud streaming is only accessible through PlayStation Plus, which is currently restricted to the highest-tier subscription – PS Plus Premium. This means that only those with premium subscriptions can utilize this functionality on the PlayStation Portal; everyone else will be excluded. However, by Sony making this move, they have arguably increased the value of PS Plus Premium compared to its previous state.
If you don’t own a PS Plus Premium subscription, there are still adjustments in the latest PlayStation Portal update for you to notice. Sony has particularly adjusted the audio settings of the hardware and will now automatically lower the volume when the audio levels are set to minimum. Furthermore, other enhancements have been made to the PS Portal’s settings, allowing users to adjust the volume of their PlayStation Link device directly from the Portal menu.
Currently, it’s unclear whether these modifications are all that will be made to the PlayStation Portal or if additional changes are in store from Sony that haven’t been disclosed yet. Regardless, we’ll know for certain once the complete patch notes for this update are released here.
