PlayStation Portal is Getting a Cloud Streaming Beta

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the introduction of cloud streaming capabilities to the PlayStation Portal is a game-changer, no pun intended. I remember when I first started gaming, we had to lug around heavy consoles and cartridges just to play our favorite games. The thought of being able to stream games directly to a device like the PlayStation Portal without the need for a PS5 is mind-boggling!

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that Sony’s PlayStation Portal has been an unprecedented triumph since its debut about a year back, surpassing even Sony’s own expectations. Yet, it hasn’t been immune to constructive criticism. One persistent issue that has sparked debate is the absence of cloud streaming capabilities – something I, and many others, thought would be a given in a device like this. Fortunately, Sony has confirmed they are indeed working on implementing this feature, gradually.

The PlayStation Portal has received a fresh system update from the company, featuring improvements for PlayStation Link and speaker sound levels, along with introducing cloud streaming functionality. This feature allows users to stream games online (given you have a good internet connection) without requiring a PS5, although there are some conditions attached.

At present, cloud streaming is exclusively accessible in beta through PlayStation Portal, with the service limited to those who are subscribers of PlayStation Plus Premium. This includes a variety of over 120 PS5 games, drawn from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog such as Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, that can be streamed.

During this beta phase, players can stream games in high definition at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. The DualSense controller’s features and cloud save options will be functional. However, some features won’t be accessible during the beta period, such as 3D audio, game trials, streaming owned games, Party chat, anything related to the Create button, and in-game purchases (meaning no microtransactions for now).
