As a long-time Emmerdale enthusiast with a soft spot for the Dingle family, I must say that Wednesday’s episode was a rollercoaster of emotions. The return of Sophie Powles as Holly Barton was a heartwarming surprise, and the scenes between her and Natalie J Robb were poignant and beautifully acted.
Heads up: The storyline from today’s Emmerdale episode (November 20th, 2024) is now streaming on ITVX, and it may reveal plot twists if you haven’t watched it yet.
In the most recent episode of Emmerdale, some surprising events unfolded for the viewers, as Moira Dingle (played by Natalie J Robb) underwent brain tumor surgery.
Instead of telling him to stay put at the hospital while he’s anxious, Moira expressed her love to Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), and moments later, succumbed to a profound slumber due to the anesthesia.
As her surgeon’s voice echoed in the present moment, Moira drifted into a dream where she was back at home with son Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir) and stepson Kyle (Huey Quinn). In this dream, they enacted her operation and then led her outside to watch them play.
In that setting, Moira found herself astonished when Sophie Powles returned to play the role of Holly Barton once more, a character who sadly passed away due to an overdose in 2016.
In scenes expertly depicted by Robb and Powles, Holly expressed that she felt much improved, further mentioning that her departure from Moira and their cherished circle was never her intention.
However, at present, Moira’s surgery resulted in excessive bleeding, causing a seizure, which was a sudden halt to Holly guiding her towards eternal life.
Even though she deeply yearned to be with her cherished daughter, Moira found it difficult to depart from Kyle and Isaac. In the end, Holly observed that her mom had remained unchanged.
After regaining consciousness in her state of recuperation, Moira yearned deeply for Holly’s return, expressing to Cain that she had embraced her tightly before.
Moira felt content after successfully navigating the risky operation. However, unexpectedly, the events of that day unfolded in reverse for us, seen from Cain’s point of view, leaving us with a strange, almost disorienting sensation.
In the scene, it was noticed that Cain had swollen knuckles, and he encountered both his half-brother Caleb Miligan (played by William Ash) and Jimmy King (portrayed by Nick Miles).

Jimmy criticized Cain for physically assaulting James Chase, who is the former husband of Cain’s sister Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper), an incident that reportedly occurred off-screen.
Afterward, Cain struck Jimmy, yet an unexpected turn of events unfolded when distressed character Ruby Fox-Miligan (played by Beth Cordingly) was seen completing her dressing routine in the garage, simultaneously with Cain.
Ruby found sanctuary away from her distant father, Anthony (Nicholas Day). A disagreement between her and Cain sparked intense emotions, causing Cain to feel remorseful for his actions against Moira, which happened at an especially inopportune moment.
Tormented by guilt, Cain nearly avoided seeing Moira. However, he found himself heading towards her room despite the burden of his hidden transgression. Will Cain be able to bear this secret or will he ultimately reveal everything to his wife and brother?
