As I reflect on the passing of June Spencer, who brought Peggy to life so vividly for over seven decades in The Archers, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss and admiration. Having shared the airwaves with this extraordinary woman since 2000, I can attest that she was indeed a phenomenon – a living legend who embodied the elegance and skill of the golden age of radio acting while maintaining a timeless, youthful spirit that embraced the modern world.
In 1950, June Spencer first appeared as Peggy in the initial episode of “The Archers,” and remained a vital part of the ongoing BBC radio series until her retirement in 2022 at the impressive age of 103.
When she died on 8th November 2024, aged 105, fans mourned and tributes flooded in.
Three of her friends from the cast of The Archers are paying their own tribute in TopMob.
Read on for what they had to say.
Louiza Patikas
In a unique and outstanding manner, June was an extraordinary figure – a living icon of legend. She masterfully encapsulated the elegance and accuracy characteristic of the golden era of radio acting, yet she seemed timeless and embraced the contemporary world wholeheartedly. This included the numerous young actors who followed in her footsteps and flourished under her tutelage.
It was a privilege to be acquainted with her, to collaborate with her on stage, and to engage in Scrabble matches with her. She was absolutely irreplaceable.
(Louiza Patikas has played Peggy’s granddaughter Helen in The Archers since 2000.)
Pat Gallimore
For five decades, June had been my wife’s mother-in-law. She was an exceptional actress and a cherished friend. The heartfelt tributes from the cast of The Archer family reflect how deeply she was admired and the profound impact she made on us all.
1) She served as the head of the family in Ambridge, a dedicated colleague known for her compassion and kindness. It was truly fortunate to have collaborated with her over such an extended period. Our friendship and the moments we spent together both in front and behind the microphone hold special value to me.
Dearest June, I shall miss you greatly. RIP ❤️
(Pat Gallimore has played Peggy’s daughter-in-law Pat in The Archers since 1974.)
David Troughton
June Spencer, truly remarkable! An ultimate pro, delightful colleague, consistently showing concern about your well-being, and most importantly, serving as the heart of the Ambridge community for over five decades.
Assuming the role from Colin Skipp that belonged to Tony Archer felt quite challenging at first, but her warmth, competence, playful spirit, and compassionate nature made the transition into Ambridge’s lifestyle effortless. I am eternally thankful for that. She was an extraordinary woman, and her influence will endure forever.
(David Troughton has played Peggy’s son Tony in The Archers since 2014.)
