As a seasoned comic book enthusiast and collector with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest revelations from “Peacemaker” have left me absolutely thrilled! It’s not every day we get such a wealth of information about the vast and wondrous DC Universe.
James Gunn’s recent confirmation that Peacemaker’s first season is largely part of the DC Universe (DCU), except for one scene, offers intriguing prospects for the future of the franchise. The show delves into the escapades of Christopher Smith (John Cena) following the events of The Suicide Squad, focusing on the exploits of an antihero amidst a world teeming with metahumans. This confirmation essentially legitimizes the existence of multiple DC characters and offers valuable glimpses into the universe that Gunn and Peter Safran are constructing.
Peacemaker Main Cast Is Now DCU Canon
The primary characters from the DCU series are the most noticeable new additions to the canon. Among these characters, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker collaborates with Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), John Economos (Steve Agee), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) – who is Amanda Waller’s daughter. In the first season, Judomaster (Nhut Le) appears as a villain tasked with safeguarding an extraterrestrial species called Butterflies. However, it’s White Dragon (Robert Patrick), Peacemaker’s father, who reveals the most about the current status of the DCU.
Auggie Smith, or White Dragon as he’s commonly known, is one of the initial confirmed villains in the DC Universe. Originally a vigilante, Auggie later became a white supremacist, hinting at a more sinister past in the world of costumed figures that predates the current era. This fits perfectly with Gunn’s concept of the DCU as a universe where superhuman activity isn’t a recent development but has been part of history for some time.
Confirmed Justice League Members
Through his frequent criticisms of superheroes, it’s clear that Peacemaker is acquainted with several Justice League members in the DC Universe. In particular, during his speeches about “true heroes,” Smith explicitly names Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman, and The Flash, implying these characters have been active for an extended period, earning them recognition as common household names.
Gunn’s DC Universe will kick off its cinematic journey with “Superman,” featuring David Corenswet portraying the Man of Steel. Moreover, Themyscira, the mythical home of Wonder Woman, is set as the backdrop for the upcoming TV series titled “Paradise Lost.” At present, Aquaman, The Flash, and Green Arrow have not been announced for any DCU project. However, given that Peacemaker seems to be acquainted with their identities, skills, and heroic stature, it’s reasonable to anticipate their appearance in future endeavors.
The Batman Universe Connection
In disagreement with Batman’s efficiency in crime-fighting, Peacemaker points out that the Caped Crusader is indeed active and has a long list of notorious adversaries. When confronted about being a murderer himself, Peacemaker becomes irritated and asserts that Batman’s ‘no-kill’ policy ultimately harms society, since antagonists like The Riddler and The Mad Hatter are imprisoned only to later be released and cause chaos in Gotham City once more.
Without a doubt, Edward Nigma, also known as the Riddler, is a character well-known to many. This mastermind with a flair for puzzles has been one of Batman’s most distinctive adversaries since his first appearance in Detective Comics #140 back in 1948. Bill Finger and Dick Sprang were the ones who brought this character to life. Over the years, the Riddler has delighted in challenging Batman with intricate riddles, and retaliates against his failures by causing harm to innocent people.
Regarding the character of Jervis Tetch, also known as the Mad Hatter, it was this trio – Bill Finger, Lew Sayre Schwartz, and Bob Kane – who introduced him in the 1948 issue #49 of Batman. Using advanced technology to control minds, the Mad Hatter indulges his fixation with “Alice in Wonderland” by committing crimes that mirror the classic children’s tale.
Peacemaker’s casual comment hints that the Riddler and Mad Hatter have caused trouble in Gotham City multiple times, making them serious threats. It’s thrilling to discover these characters are part of the DC Universe, but the intriguing aspect is that Batman has been battling crime for a considerable period, leading to his reputation as someone who frequently lets villains escape from prison.
The DCU D-List
In the first season of “Peacemaker,” Christopher frequently mentions lesser-known superheroes from the DC Universe, introducing some of its most peculiar characters. For instance, we encounter Darrell Dane, also known as Doll Man, who first appeared in Comic #27 of Feature Comics back in 1939. This character was created by Will Eisner and is a scientist turned superhero who can shrink to just six inches while retaining his full-sized strength. This indicates that the ability to change size has been part of the DC Universe for quite some time.
It’s confirmed that Kite-Man, whose real name is Charles “Chuck” Brown, will be making an appearance on Peacemaker. First introduced in the 1960’s Batman #133 by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, Kite-Man has often been seen as a comical villain. However, his humorous origins have not stopped him from gaining prominence, particularly through the Harley Quinn animated series, even earning himself a spin-off show.
To wrap it up, let’s introduce Matter-Eater Lad, a unique hero boasting the astounding power to consume any material. Originally hailing from the planet Bismoll as Tenzil Kem, he first appeared in Adventure Comics #303, penned by Jerry Siegel and John Forte back in 1963. In the comics, Matter-Eater Lad is an extraterrestrial and a valued member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, aspects that can be seamlessly integrated into the DC Universe.
The Fifth-Dimensional Imp
The unexpected validation of the show comes when character Peacemaker mentions Bat-Mite, a fifth-dimensional entity who debuted in 1959’s Detective Comics #267 by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. This imp capable of altering reality confirms the existence of multiple dimensions within the DCU. In Peacemaker’s words, Bat-Mite is “Batman’s biggest fan from another dimension.” The appearance of Bat-Mite hints that the DCU might explore its most extraordinary ideas, such as beings with near-limitless powers who interfere in superheroes’ lives for amusement.
