As a longtime fan of Suits, I must say that the cast and crew have truly left their mark on the television industry. Aaron Korsh, the showrunner, has shown remarkable foresight, from planning Meghan Markle’s departure months before her engagement to ensuring the storylines remained compelling even with such a significant cast change.
Gabriel Macht has some compelling evidence about the upcoming Suits spinoff.
Five years since the actor bid farewell to Harvey Specter, he will once again step into that role for the upcoming premiere of Suits: LA, which is set for February 23.
On November 20, Gabriel joked on Instagram that when an old friend is facing difficulties, it’s the perfect moment to address matters and rectify them properly.
He additionally posted a video, accompanied by the original series’ theme tune “Greenback Boogie” by Ima Robot. This video spotlighted the “H.S” embroidery on the cuff of his white button-up shirt. To finish off his outfit, he wore brown shoes bearing the brand name “Harvey” inside.
The show debuting on February 23rd takes place within the same world as the original, with Stephen Amell portraying the character Ted Black, a skilled lawyer, and Bryan Greenberg appearing as his apprentice Rick Dodsen.
TopMob News has reached out to NBC for comment and has not yet heard back.
Gabriel, who played a role from 2011 to 2019 alongside Patrick J. Adams, Gina Torres, and Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane) on Suits, is feeling hopeful about the upcoming series. Plus, it’s a significant boost that its predecessor was the most-watched television show in the U.S. last year on streaming platforms.
The 52-year-old shared with TopMob News during an exclusive interview that he anticipates the fans of our series will find it straightforward to adapt to their upcoming show. They share many of the same writers and directors, there’s a change in location and some fresh characters, but overall, I believe it’ll be terrific.
At that point, he playfully hinted at a possible comeback. He also mentioned, “Should an occasion emerge that benefits all parties without causing distraction, I believe we might catch glimpses of some guest appearances.
Whereabouts of Harvey might be now? To give you a quick recap, the top-notch lawyer in New York City got married to Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) in the last episode and then moved from the Big Apple to work at Mike and Rachel’s public interest law firm situated in Seattle.
“He’s only doing pro bono work,” Gabriel reflected. “I think he works for the people.”
Although the Spirit actor is already putting on his blazer, other alums have also shared their interest in reprising their roles. As Sarah, who played the former secretary-turned-former COO, told TopMob, “If Donna is needed, I’m happy to put the shoes on.”
Patrick, on the other hand, expressed greater enthusiasm for being part of the upcoming show, as it too is the brainchild of Aaron Korsh.
In a recent interview with Sarah on Today last month, he shared that he has stepped forward to volunteer. He and his team have expressed their readiness and enthusiasm, essentially saying “open the doors for us!” Currently, they are in the midst of creating their debut season. Yesterday, he exchanged messages with Aaron, and things seem to be progressing smoothly.
In the meantime, as we wait for further updates on “Suits: LA”, delve deeper into captivating facts about the original series instead.
Initially, Aaron Korsh, the creator of Suits, didn’t hold high hopes when he presented his initial script. During the 2008 writer’s strike, his agent encouraged him to develop stories about a former finance boss named Harvey into a series. As an aspiring comedy writer, Korsh explained to The Hollywood Reporter, “I sat down to write something in the style of Entourage set on Wall Street. However, when I finished writing, what I had was not a comedy but rather a one-hour show that was more dramatic, with unexpected twists and turns.
Without anticipating a favorable decision, he admitted, ” Frankly, I never imagined that anyone would purchase this series. I was merely attempting to craft a sample script that might catch someone’s eye and potentially lead to employment.
In changing it for the USA pilot version, the main characters, led by Mike Ross played by Patrick J. Adams, underwent a shift from being a team of investment bankers to a band of top-tier lawyers instead. As acknowledged by creator Aaron Korsh, this adjustment heightened the tension because now, an uneducated Mike wasn’t merely deceiving his way into a wealthy job; he was breaking the law. Korsh added that this change also opened up avenues for numerous ethical quandaries since the legal profession provided ample ground for such dilemmas.
2. Korsh disagreed with the network regarding their suggested edits. He mentioned that in the initial season, they were insistent on having a standalone case for each episode, which he found himself frequently being asked to add more scenes focusing on that week’s client.
He explained to THR that he would include scenes and then remove them, “and nobody seemed to mind or even notice. The following year, they said, ‘Actually, you don’t need a standalone episode anymore.’
3. In New York, welcome! Although only a portion of the series filmed within the city limits, when production moved to Toronto, they had to think outside the box. Two massive murals served as substitutes for the grand Manhattan skyline, illuminating the backdrop of all office sets during both day and night scenes.
As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to express it in my own words: Much like Sarah Rafferty’s character, Donna Paulsen, described in a TikTok clip, New York City feels to me like a colossal shower curtain – a bustling, vibrant barrier between the world outside and the comfort within.
4. During his audition for the role of Mike, the college dropout with a bold demeanor and impressive legal background, Adams delivered an exceptionally persuasive closing statement using his photographic memory and law expertise to secure a prominent position in the legal field.
Speaking as a fanatical devotee, let me recount an event from 2011 – my dismissal from the brief-lived series titled “Friends With Benefits.” This wasn’t just any ordinary termination; it was a high-profile one. But when I found myself face-to-face with those producers, I didn’t hesitate. I looked them straight in the eye and declared, with absolute conviction, “Grant me this role. I swear, I won’t disappoint. I’ll outwork anyone you’ve ever encountered.” Those words flowed effortlessly from my lips, the most straightforward promise I’ve ever made.
5. Regarding Meghan Markle, the future duchess who landed the role of paralegal and aspiring attorney Rachel Zane following roles on The League and Without a Trace, she attended her audition in denim and a strappy top. Feeling underdressed, as she shared in her 2017 cover interview with Vanity Fair, she quickly popped into H&M to buy a $35 little black dress.
It proved to be a smart purchase as she was asked to slip into something dressier. But the true secret weapon for the star, who ended up in competition with actress Kim Shaw for the part, was her chemistry with Adams. As Jeff Wachtel, the chief content officer of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, told THR: “They had it right away. It was a lot of fun.”
6. It wasn’t just luck that Markle felt strongly drawn to the diligent, law-aspiring Rachel. In 2013, she explained to Marie Claire, “Rachel and I share similarities: we’re both ambitious, driven individuals who aren’t afraid to tackle challenges head-on.” They also had a habit of being overly critical (“I criticize myself more than anyone else might”) and a mutual appreciation for fresh, locally sourced food.
In Markle’s words, “My character shares my love for food since they recognize I’m a food enthusiast.” Worth noting, she donned personal jewelry in the series, such as her grandmother’s charm bracelet and her cherished signet ring. To summarize, I’m constantly on a mission to discover exceptional eateries and innovative culinary creations.
7. Gina Torres successfully persuaded casting directors to reconsider their initial decision, which had her character, Jessica Pearson (managing partner), played by a man. As the former star of 24 explained to Entertainment Weekly, her identity as a woman in her forties, with two decades of experience in her field, greatly influenced the characterization of Jessica. She also appreciated how authentically the Harvard graduate portrayed the role.
She clarified that playing that character had the most significant impact on her, as it was intimidating for some and inspiring for others; at times, it even managed to evoke both feelings in people.
8. The situation seemed almost resolved when Jessica (who was then married to actor Laurence Fishburne) decided to depart the show as her contract expired in 2016. As Korsh shared with The Hollywood Reporter, the intention was for Jessica to relocate to Chicago with her boyfriend (D.B. Woodside), but a vengeful ex-client would end her life instead. “I didn’t believe we’d witness it; we’d just hear about it,” he explained. “It would shock everyone, and we’d then skip forward two years in time.
As a devoted admirer, I must share that the network initially resisted, but when it came to penning the episode, we collectively felt compelled to grant her a joyful conclusion. Korsh elaborated, “We chose to provide her with a happy ending and, in doing so, we certainly didn’t close the book on the possibility of her return.” In fact, such a resolution paves the way for her potential spin-off into her very own series titled show.
9. In many aspects, Gabriel Macht effortlessly took on the role of the influential lawyer Harvey Specter. “My sister was once an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx,” the native of NYC shared with The TV Addict prior to the 2011 premiere. “My aunt specialized in family law. One of my good friends was a leading corporate attorney in Los Angeles….And my cousin practiced family law, handling divorces. I’ve been surrounded by it all my life, so I’ve picked up various aspects here and there. And when I receive the scripts each week, I don’t need to look up legal terms to understand them.
But he did voice objections to the shooting location (“I love the people of Toronto and I love our crew but New York is where the story is written and I think it should be shot there,” he told Metro in 2012) and Harvey’s overall look. “I find it to be icky and crispy,” he said of his slicked-back hairstyle, “but it works for Harvey.”
10. Contrary to some fans’ expectations, the romantic pairing of managing partner Harvey and Donna from Rafferty wasn’t an inevitable plan in the creator’s mind. I, for one, didn’t write the pilot thinking “Harvey and Donna are destined,” or even “Will they end up together as the main ‘will they or won’t they?'” Instead, it was a question we grappled with when it came to Mike and Rachel. “Should we keep them together? What will their story become?” I shared with USA, reflecting on our creative journey.
But, yes, he took note of the #Darvey shippers on social media, saying that “they’re louder than the percentage who aren’t” and feel “that they comprise 240 percent of viewers.” Eventually, he gave in, ending the series with the pair’s spontaneous wedding.
11. In a 2012 interview with Blast magazine, the actor mentioned that he and Macht have been friends for approximately two decades. Their daughters, Satine (his with wife Jacinda Barrett) and Oona (Macht’s with Santtu Seppälä), are close friends as well. He added that they are extremely close friends who have even attended each other’s weddings. Furthermore, their families also include sons Luca and Iris respectively.
12. Rick Hoffman often found himself surrounded by his fluffy co-stars, despite being severely allergic to them. While his character, Louis Litt, the managing partner, was quite fond of cats, Hoffman required EpiPens and inhalers during filming scenes involving them due to his allergy.
Mike possessed an extraordinary ability for perfect recall, whereas Adams demonstrated strong photography abilities. Most of the photographs adorning Rachel’s office were taken by Adams, and he also posts additional images on his Instagram account.
14. As a dedicated Suitors fan since its debut, I’ve been along for the ride from the very start. Even before the series hit Netflix in 2023 and gained widespread acclaim, I was already hooked. Olympian Michael Phelps graced our screens with a cameo in season three, while basketball legend Charles Barkley demonstrated his unwavering fandom by juggling a few balls to secure a spot on the show in season five.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an exciting moment: Recently, after boasting about a particular show, I received an invitation that had me thinking, “I need to find a way to make this happen.” This was the response I gave when approached by THR. With the playoffs in full swing, our schedule is packed, and our only day off falls on Friday. However, when it comes to my precious day off, I declared, “I don’t care. We’re heading up to Toronto for this event.
15. Regarding Katherine Heigl, she openly pursued creator Korsh to secure a role on the series during its final two seasons. In an interview with TopMob News, she shared how she got the part of Samantha Wheeler by approaching Korsh directly. “I basically sold myself,” she said, “When he mentioned that he’d be busy for the eighth season, I asked if he needed anyone since I was free.
She admitted it was an effective approach, and she planned to repeat it frequently. “I’ll reach out to every showrunner of my favorite series,” she said, “basically asking if they require any new characters.
16. Korsh anticipated that Meghan Markle would become a princess, and he had been preparing for her exit from ‘Suits’ several months prior to her official announcement in November 2017.
He shared with The Telegraph a year ago that their relationship was starting to grow significantly. He chose not to pry, so he didn’t ask directly about it. As the season moved forward, he expressed a preference for positive developments in Meghan’s life, which would probably mean her leaving the show, so we planned accordingly.
17. Fittingly, the final episode of season seven concluded with Rachel Markle being taken to Seattle by her dashing prince—the chance for them to establish their own law firm together. However, they had originally planned to marry two seasons prior, but Mike’s incarceration delayed their nuptials.
In the original scenario, the plan was for us to get married, and it seemed a bit overly sentimental to me as we read through it. However, everyone was eager to proceed, and I couldn’t help but think, “This is too much like a TV episode! I’m getting married, then going to jail – it felt like we were cramming everything into one storyline.
In the end, Korsh learned about the discussions and chose to modify things at the last minute. As Adams put it, “Refusing the wedding seemed much more crucial, so the revised pages were delivered just one day prior stating that it wouldn’t be a wedding.
18. On Markle’s special day, everyone in the cast got dressed up, as Korsh explained. “We all went together,” he noted. “There were roughly 10 of us when we went – it was incredible!
And there was no chance of any of them RSVPing no.
Reflecting on our shared journey spanning numerous years on the show, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary experience it has been for us. Our bond transcends the time we spent in college or high school with our friends, forging a connection that feels more like kinship. Indeed, we have grown to be not just colleagues, but a family of sorts. As such, this endeavor remains a heartwarming family affair for us.
