As a lifelong aficionado of cinematic storytelling, I can confidently say that the upcoming live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” has me utterly enchanted. Having grown up with the animated series and being captivated by its magical world and heartwarming tales, this new venture promises to transport us back to the realm of Berk and its extraordinary inhabitants.
Explore the making of “How To Train Your Dragon” as Universal Pictures brings this cherished tale of Hiccup and Toothless to life on the big screen with live-action. The beloved animated films’ successor, this live-action adaptation follows in their footsteps, with three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois once again at the helm. Behind the scenes, DeBlois is offering a glimpse into the process of revisiting the enchanting world that captured our hearts.
Universal Pictures recently shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse at “How To Train Your Dragon,” with director Dean DeBlois narrating the process of casting real-life versions of Hiccup (Mason Thames) and Astrid (Nico Parker). For enthusiasts of this beloved series, it’s an exciting peek into the raw footage of DeBlois and his team planning and sketching out the original 2010 film. The story unfolds as we witness the development of the village of Berk and its famous dragon pit springing to life.
The filmmaker discusses the unique bond between Thames’ Hiccup and his dragon companion, Toothless. He explains that there’s an appealing quality to this friendship that resonates with people everywhere. However, beneath the surface, this tale is fundamentally about discovering one’s individuality and mustering the courage to stand by personal beliefs in a world that often pushes for conformity.
The first-look video also features new scenes of Astrid alongside Fishlegs (Julian Dennison), Snotlout (Gabriel Howell), Ruffnut (Bronwyn James), and Tuffnut (Harry Trevaldwy). This group of kids are Hiccup’s friends and join him on this magnificent journey to show Berk that Vikings and dragons can coexist. As an added bonus, there’s footage of DeBlois breaking the news to Mason Thames and Nico Parker that they’ve been cast as Hiccup and Astrid, respectively, in the new How To Train Your Dragon.
In addition, Gerard Butler reappears, portraying the imposing Stoick the Vast from the animated How to Train Your Dragon series. The movie also features aerial scenes of numerous dragons soaring over Berk, with intense explosions that seem to be part of the film’s grand finale, as Hiccup, his companions, and Toothless confront the colossal Red Death in battle.
Based on the critically acclaimed book series by Cressida Cowell, titled “New York Times Bestseller,” the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” will be screening in cinemas starting from June 13, 2025.
