As a seasoned movie critic who has seen countless soap opera scenes unfold, I must admit that my heart was warmed by Sophie Powles‘ return to Emmerdale as Moira Dingle’s late daughter, Holly Barton. The emotional depth and poignancy of this episode were palpable, a testament to the skillful writing and acting involved.
In a heartwarming twist that had Emmerdale fans on the edge of their seats, Sophie Powles made a shocking return to the show tonight. Her character, Holly Barton, appeared in a dream sequence as Moira Dingle’s (Natalie J Robb) deceased daughter.
2016 saw ITV’s soap opera take the nation by surprise as Holly was discovered deceased in her bed by a devastated Moira, following an unintentional heroin overdose.
Eight years after Robb’s remarkable display, she met up with her old acting partner once more – all while Moira was having a brain operation.
The star also tells us of her happy memories on Emmerdale, and what she’s been up to since leaving.
Read on for the full interview below.
Were you excited when Emmerdale approached you for this episode?
I was overjoyed to return! Working on Emmerdale was truly exceptional. Not only did I make lifelong friends among the cast and crew, but I also acquired valuable knowledge and created unforgettable moments. I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity to reunite with my friends and work on a show that means so much to me.
Have you watched Natalie play Moira’s brain tumour storyline?
Natalie is truly outstanding as an actress, pouring her heart and spirit into each character she portrays. She meticulously researches every plot detail to deliver a genuine performance that leaves me moved and in awe of her talent. Her work is both emotionally stirring and undeniably remarkable.
How exciting it was to be a part of that episode! Was it a challenging choice for you to return and were you satisfied with the script?
Absolutely, this episode is incredibly moving, and Nat and I both shed tears while going through the scenes. The writing is simply captivating and beautiful.
Tell us about your day on set.
I found it incredibly delightful to return for the day. In truth, it seemed as if I hadn’t departed at all. It was simply a wonderful day spent indulging in my passions alongside cherished individuals.
Did it take you long to get back into the role of Holly?
Yesterday evening, I had a FaceTime chat with Natalie to ensure we were in sync. The moment I stepped onto the set alongside her, immersed in our characters, it felt as if I’d never left. Hair, makeup, and costume did an outstanding job of making me feel like Holly once more.
Do you have a lot of happy memories from your time on Emmerdale?
One way to rephrase this in a more conversational style could be: “Working on Emmerdale remains my most cherished memories. I joined the show at quite a young age, and it was there that I learned a great deal, had countless laughs, and forged bonds so strong they feel like family.
As a fledgling film enthusiast, I was fortunate enough to be embraced by many seasoned veterans in this industry. They showered me with affection and kindness, like an apprentice learning from skilled artisans.
Regrettably, a few special individuals have moved on, including the enchanting and magical companion I knew as Kitty, as well as our exceptionally talented producer, Gavin. I’ll forever cherish the moments we shared and the impact they made in my life.
What have you been up to since leaving the show?
After departing from the show, I’ve found myself quite occupied. I’ve been jet-setting with my partner Mark and friends, experiencing fantastic chances to help and co-produce his film ventures. Additionally, I’ve dived into theatre performances, voice-overs, and penning verses. And together with my talented friend Emily, we run a print business called The Happy Newspaper.
Becoming a mother to two remarkable little girls is undeniably the most transformative and wondrous event in my life.
Do you keep in touch with anybody from Emmerdale?
“I keep in touch with a lot of the cast who are a massive part of my family’s life.”
Do you miss Holly and being part of the show?
It’s been quite a while since I last saw that show, and I genuinely yearn for its return, as well as the camaraderie with my fellow cast members. For an actress, stable employment can be scarce, so I often find myself longing for the assurance of spending my weeks immersed in something I truly cherish.
Will you be watching the episode go out?
“Yes. Can’t wait to sit with my little family and watch it.”
