Shetland’s Calder is in uncharted territory – and Tosh comes under fire

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for crime dramas, I must admit that Shetland‘s ninth season has been a rollercoaster of emotions, especially for Detective Tosh Mcleod (Alison O’Donnell). Her personal and professional lives have intertwined in ways that even the most intricate plots couldn’t have predicted.

Unraveling the enigma behind Annie Bett’s murder in season 9 of Shetland proved to be an intricate task for Tosh. This wasn’t just due to the fact that Annie was a spy, adding layers of complexity, but also because she was more than just a detective’s acquaintance – she was a friend deeply rooted within the community.

In tonight’s episode on Wednesday, 20th November, emotions ran thick as a knot of Shetland locals convened at a tavern in remembrance of the departed. However, when Tosh made her entrance, she was met with an icy reception.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve just learned that the estranged spouse of my acquaintance Annie, a man named Ian, has been apprehended by the authorities. This news has left many locals bewildered and infuriated, including Donnie, Tosh’s partner and a close friend of Ian’s.

In time, Ian was freed when Joni, a friend of Annie’s, informed Tosh that she and Ian had been in a relationship, and that he was with her the night Annie was murdered. The lab tests also indicated that the blood on Ian’s shirt belonged to him, not Annie.

However, John Harris, a man who Annie used to reside with (before her passing), maintained the belief that Ian was involved in Annie’s death and intentionally ran him over with his vehicle.

That morning, Donnie was constantly questioning the detective regarding her handling of his friend, a topic that had become quite contentious within their household recently.

This location is an isolated community, relatively small and tightly bonded. Frequently, minor disagreements arise due to conflicting interests, and during our investigations, we often encounter individuals who are familiar to us. However, in this specific case, it’s a matter that’s particularly personal for her, making it uncomfortably close.

In terms of their partnership with Donnie, O’Donnell remarked: “Their relationship faces some challenges due to the fact that his friends are closely involved, making it a tricky road to navigate.

Just as many connections encounter tough phases, this seemed unlike anything they’d experienced before. It appeared to run deeper and be more foundational to their understanding of one another, their partnership, and their roles within their tight-knit community. The significance of their choices and commitments became clearer in this context.

It seems unlikely that Tosh will emerge without some damage. By the end of the series, her relationships aren’t as strong or healthy as they initially appeared at the beginning.

And it wasn’t just Tosh who was feeling the weight of it all at the season halfway point.

As a cinephile, I found myself developing an unusual bond with little Noah, the silent, traumatized boy whose mother met a tragic end. Ever since that fateful day, he’s been struggling with debilitating panic attacks.

Although at first there was no response, it was the detective who eventually managed to get him to discuss his mother, albeit briefly, by employing math problems and dinosaur discussions to create an opening for communication.

Her most recent encounter seems to have made a lasting impression, as she called Annie’s sister later that night to see how Noah was doing.

“What am I doing?” a visibly emotional Calder whispered to herself after she put the phone down.

During his visit to Annie’s house, her acquaintance and previous math teacher, Euan Rossi, too noticed her affection towards Noah.

“You act like you care about him,” he said.

But Calder was keen to brush off that observation.

“He’s just a witness,” she responded.

Euan advised, “It’s better not to develop strong emotions,” and Calder replied that maintaining a certain detachment was crucial for her role to be effective.

But evidently, that is easier said than done.
