As a long-time fan who has journeyed through the magical realms of Final Fantasy 7 since its original release, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and frustration upon hearing about the lack of DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While it’s understandable that Square Enix wants to focus on delivering the third part of the series as quickly as possible, it’s hard not to wish for just a little more content in the meantime.
Despite Square Enix not meeting its anticipated profits, it’s indisputable that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, one of the most anticipated games in 2024, is a standout title. It dominates The Game Awards with seven nominations alongside Astro Bot and has garnered universal praise from critics. Nevertheless, the game director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has confirmed that there are no plans for additional content or DLC at this time.
In an interview with The Daily Star, Hamaguchi indicated that the team is indeed aware of the strong desire among fans for additional downloadable content (DLC). Given that Final Fantasy 7 Remake was followed by Intermission when it transitioned to PlayStation 5 in 2021, it’s not unreasonable to expect similar content for this game as well.
From Hamaguchi’s point of view, it seems that fans are yearning for more than just DLC. Instead, they are eagerly awaiting the swift release of the next installment in the series.
We’ve chosen not to work on new DLC episodes right now because we’re pouring all our energy into releasing the third game as soon as possible. Consequently, our current focus is solely on that project.
It’s great news that progress is advancing. The third act’s storyline has been wrapped up, and the team is now taking action. While specifics about what it will provide are scarce (Rocket Town seems likely), producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed that players will have the ability to pilot the Highwind airship for free exploration across the world. Consequently, the map is being revamped to accommodate this new feature. Keep an eye out for further updates in the meantime.
