James Gunn Reveals Superman Uses Real Cows on Set (But Why?)

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours debating the merits of various superhero universes, I must say that James Gunn‘s commitment to animal rights is nothing short of refreshing. Having watched documentaries like “Blackfish” and “The Cove,” I can appreciate the ethical dilemmas that come with using live animals in film production.

One delightful aspect of James Gunn’s lively social media activity is discovering intriguing tidbits about the DC Universe in unexpected spots. For instance, a discussion on movie industry practices for animal handling inadvertently verified that Superman actually includes real cattle.

In response to a query on BlueSky about the DC Universe’s handling of live animals in their films and shows, Gunn stated that he prefers using CGI for wild creatures in his projects. This implies that real apes will not appear in any DCU production due to their potential stress and emotional distress on movie sets. Interestingly, this decision affects popular ape characters such as Gorilla Grodd, Monsieur Mallah, Detective Chimp, and the Ultra-Humanite within the DC Universe.

The choice varies based on the creature. Generally speaking, I believe it’s not right to exploit most wild animals, including primates, for movie productions. Instead, I opt for computer-generated imagery (CGI) in my films when such creatures are involved. As for tamed animals, it depends on their roles in the production.

As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: James Gunn, the director, only allows exceptions for domesticated animals if a Humane Society representative is present to monitor their wellbeing on set. This was the case with the rats and rabbits in ‘The Suicide Squad’, and also in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. Even when working with trained animals like dogs, Gunn prefers not to use flying harnesses or place them in stressful situations.

Gunn’s stance on animal rights is commendable, adding another reason for fans to be excited about the DCU. But there’s one more piece of information for fans to chew on. In the middle of his BlueSky thread, the filmmaker inadvertently confirmed he’s using real cows for Superman. This raises the question: why?

Superman Will Explore Clark Kent’s Smallville Connection (Or Introduce Bat-Cow)

James Gunn Reveals Superman Uses Real Cows on Set (But Why?)

It’s not surprising to see cows in the story of Superman, given his rural upbringing based on the DC Comics lore. Kal-El, who later becomes Superman, is sent from another planet and adopted by a farming family in Smallville, Kansas. His name changes to Clark Kent, and he spends his formative years on a farm, working with crops and livestock. These experiences instill in him an appreciation for human life, which ultimately contributes to the development of Superman as a beacon of hope.

Given that the cows in the Superman universe are likely linked to Smallville, it’s now clear that the upcoming movie will touch upon aspects of Clark Kent’s upbringing. As this isn’t an origin story for the DCU, there was a possibility that Gunn might reserve Smallville for another project and concentrate solely on Metropolis. However, if cows can be incorporated in a way that ensures their safety, we may witness some flashback scenes set in Smallville, or perhaps Clark will make a brief stop at his hometown before or after confronting Lex Luthor.

It’s rather unexpected that Superman might present Bat-Cow as a character in the upcoming movie. First introduced in “Batman Incorporated” #1, Bat-Cow was saved from a slaughterhouse by Damian Wayne and subsequently brought to the Wayne Mansion. Given that Krypto is already part of Superman’s universe, having other DC pets appear would add an interesting touch. However, due to the fact that Bat-Cow might require CGI animation rather than casual appearances, it might be more suitable for him to make his debut after Damian becomes a regular in the DC Universe, which is expected during “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”.

Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
