Doctor Who companions in order: From Susan Foreman to Belinda Chandra

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I must say that the recent developments in the show have been nothing short of exhilarating! The introduction of new characters like Ruby Sunday and Joy has breathed fresh air into the TARDIS crew, while the return of some familiar faces like Dan Lewis (John Bishop) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) brought a sense of nostalgia that was truly heartwarming.

There is only one person as important as the Doctor themselves in Doctor Who: their companion.

In many episodes of the lengthy BBC series, the companion character plays an essential role, contributing significantly to the narrative as it traverses through various spatial and temporal realms.

Back in 1963, I had the honor of being the very first companion introduced – none other than Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s own granddaughter (played by Carole Ann Ford). Since then, numerous characters have stepped into her role, and most recently, Catherine Tate is returning as the beloved character Donna Noble for the special 60th-anniversary episodes airing in November.

Lately, we’ve witnessed Millie Gibson portraying Ruby Sunday, who will soon be joined by her new companions, played by Nicola Coughlan as Joy and Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, in their travels through the TARDIS.

To clarify, which friends are placed in the middle and what is their specific sequence? And, who should be included in this collection?

Below you’ll find a chronological listing of Doctor Who’s companions, arranged according to their debut in the show’s episodes.

Doctor Who companions in order

Characters who joined The Doctor on adventures, either by traveling in the TARDIS or playing significant roles in specific episodes or regularly throughout the series, are listed below.

Susan Foreman

Who plays Susan Foreman? Carole Ann Ford.

First appearance: An Unearthly Child

Last appearance: The Dalek Invasion of Earth (regular), The Five Doctors (guest)

Susan Foreman was introduced in the first ever episode of Doctor Who in 1963, An Unearthly Child.

It’s Susan’s exceptional talent that catches the interest of her teachers Ian and Barbara. They eventually track her down to an old scrapyard, where they discover the TARDIS.

Inside, the teachers meet Susan’s grandfather, the time-traveller known as The Doctor.

The character remained in the show until the 1964 story The Dalek Invasion of Earth, where Susan fell in love with a human resistance fighter named David Campbell. The Doctor locked her out of the TARDIS to enable her to move on with her life.

Ford once again took on his character in the 1983 tale titled “The Five Doctors” and subsequently in the 1993 charitable production called “Dimensions in Time.

Barbara Wright

Who plays Barbara Wright? Jacqueline Hill.

First appearance: An Unearthly Child

Last appearance: The Chase

Barbara Wright was introduced in the first ever episode of Doctor Who in 1963, An Unearthly Child.

Barbara, as one of Susan Foreman’s teachers, explored her student’s extraordinary abilities alongside fellow teacher Ian Chesterton. In the process, they accidentally entered the TARDIS and found themselves caught up in the Doctor’s time-traveling adventures.

Throughout their time on the series, the duo yearned deeply for a chance to revisit Earth. In the grand finale of the 1965 tale titled “The Chase,” they eventually chose to depart from The Doctor, seizing an opportunity to journey back home.

Ian Chesterton

Who plays Ian Chesterton? William Russell.

First appearance: An Unearthly Child

Last appearance: The Chase (regular), The Power of the Doctor (guest)

Ian Chesterton was introduced in the first ever episode of Doctor Who in 1963, An Unearthly Child.

In the role of Susan Foreman’s teacher, Ian found himself exploring the extraordinary intellect of his student alongside Barbara Wright. This exploration led them both unexpectedly into the wonders of the TARDIS and the time-traveling adventures of the Doctor.

Throughout their stint on the series, this duo yearned deeply to revisit Earth. In the tale titled “The Chase” set in 1965, they ultimately decided to part ways with The Doctor and seize the opportunity to journey back home.

In a surprising turn of events, 57 years after his initial appearance, Russell will reprise his role as Ian in the 2022 tale titled “The Power of the Doctor,” making a brief return for a memorable cameo.

Vicki

Who plays Vicki? Maureen O’Brien.

First appearance: The Rescue

Last appearance: The Myth Makers (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

As a captivated reader, I was introduced to the intriguing character of Vicki back in the 1965 tale, “The Rescue.” Hailing from the distant future of the 25th century, Vicki is an orphan with a remarkable backstory. She survived a tragic spaceship accident that left her stranded on the alien planet Dido.

Following rescue from another crash survivor by The Doctor, Ian, and Barbara, Vicki receives an invitation to join their party, stepping in for Susan’s role within the group.

In the 1965 tale “The Myth Makers,” Vicki makes an exit from the series, choosing instead to remain in Troy following her romantic involvement with Trollius, a warrior. It’s later unveiled that she goes on to embody the legendary character known as Cressida.

After that, Vicki made an appearance in a unique short movie included with the Blu-ray version of Doctor Who’s second season, as well as an episode of the related series Tales from the TARDIS alongside her co-companion Steven Taylor.

Steven Taylor

Who plays Steven Taylor? Peter Purves.

First appearance: The Chase

Last appearance: The Savages (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

A spaceship pilot from the 23rd century, Steven Taylor is introduced in the 1965 story The Chase.

After an emergency landing on the planet Mechanus, he spends two years there before managing to hide himself aboard the TARDIS.

In the course of their thrilling journeys, Steven frequently butts heads with the Doctor regarding ethical quandaries and the casualties that occur.

In the 1966 tale “The Savages,” the character bids farewell to the series, as he embarks on a journey to govern a unified group of Savages and Elders on a devastated planet that was once torn apart by war.

Additionally, Steven was featured in an episode of the offshoot show titled Tales from the TARDIS, where he acted alongside fellow traveler Vicki.

Katarina

Who plays Katarina? Adrienne Hill.

First appearance: The Myth Makers

Last appearance: The Daleks’ Master Plan

A woman from the Ancient city of Troy, Katarina is convinced to travel with the Doctor by his departing companion Vicky.

In contrast, Katarina doesn’t survive much beyond her introduction in “The Myth Makers” of 1965; instead, she meets an early end in the subsequent tale titled “The Daleks’ Master Plan”.

Instead of complying with the demands of the fugitive Kirksen who had seized control of a spaceship, taking her hostage, Katarina decided to release the airlock, sending them both out into the vastness of space rather than letting the Doctor be coerced.

Katarina became the first companion to be killed off in the show – but she would not be the last.

Sara Kingdom

Who plays Sara Kingdom? Jean Marsh.

First appearance: The Daleks’ Master Plan

Last appearance: The Daleks’ Master Plan

In the 1965-1966 story “The Daleks’ Master Plan,” despite some debate about her status, Sara Kingdom is portrayed as an assistant to The Doctor, serving as a Space Security Agent alongside him.

Although Sara is often harsh and unfeeling, she lends a hand to The Doctor in his battle against the Daleks, ultimately employing the Time Destructor – a device that accelerates time – to thwart their destructive scheme.

Sadly, Sara cannot save herself from the device and rapidly ages before dying. Grim.

Dorothea “Dodo” Chaplet

Who plays Dodo Chaplet? Jackie Lane.

First appearance: The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve

Last appearance: The War Machines

1966 saw the introduction of a spirited and intelligent teenager named Dodo, hailing from Earth, within the narrative of the story titled “The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve.

The protagonist is a relative of Anne Chaplet, a person that The Doctor and Steven encountered in 16th century Paris during their visit in 1572, and who was later left behind by The Doctor to face the impending Massacre of 10,000 Huguenots.

In “The War Machines” (1966), Dodo joins the Doctor for a spell. She shares that she had no one to look after her in the 20th century, before suddenly deciding to retreat and spend time peacefully in the countryside at the end of her journey with him.

Polly

Who plays Polly? Anneke Wills.

First appearance: The War Machines

Last appearance: The Faceless Ones

In the 1966 tale “The War Machines,” we meet Polly, a young administrative assistant, who works under Professor Brett – the inventor of the malevolent AI named WOTAN during the vibrant ’60s era.

In the tale, Polly eventually encounters a blue-collar sailor named Ben Jackson at a nightclub after forming a bond with Dodo. Later on, when she finds herself in trouble due to harassment from someone else in the club, Ben steps in to save her.

Polly and Ben subsequently team up with the Doctor in his struggle against WOTAN, unintentionally embarking on a journey through time along with him once they hand back Dodo’s TARDIS key to him post her exit.

The duo accompany the Doctor, forming an unusual partnership, and they’re also there when he transforms into the Second Doctor.

Polly and Ben are later joined by Scottish Highlander Jamie McCrimmon in the TARDIS.

After the TARDIS brings them back to Earth a day after their departure during “The Faceless Ones” story in 1967, the duo subsequently decide to part ways with the Doctor and resume their ordinary lives.

In 2010, a narrative from the Doctor Who spin-off series titled The Sarah Jane Adventures unfolded a backstory where characters Polly and Ben were employed at an orphanage located in India.

Later on, Polly reappears in the 2017 tale “Twice Upon a Time” alongside David Bradley, where he portrays The First Doctor. However, this time it’s actress Lily Travers who takes on the role.

Ben Jackson

Who plays Ben Jackson? Michael Craze.

First appearance: The War Machines

Last appearance: The Faceless Ones

In the captivating tale of 1966, “The War Machines,” I find myself alongside a Royal Navy sailor named Ben Jackson, making our debut at roughly the same time as the intriguing character, Polly.

Following the rescue of Polly from an unsavory character at a nightclub, working-class hero Ben teams up with Polly to help The Doctor combat the artificially intelligent entity known as WOTAN.

Ben exhibits straightforwardness and a laid-back demeanor, forming an unexpected duo with the refined Polly, affectionately known as “Duchess” by him.

The duo witness the transformation of the First Doctor into the Second Doctor, accompanying him until they depart in “The Faceless Ones” (1967), a tale which brings them back to Earth. The Doctor foresees that Ben might ascend to the rank of an Admiral.

Later on, we see Ben resurface in the 2017 tale titled Twice Upon a Time. In this story, he is cast alongside David Bradley and is portrayed by actor Jared Garfield, who takes on the role of The First Doctor.

Jamie McCrimmon

Who plays Jamie McCrimmon?

Frazer Hines.

First appearance: The Highlanders

Last appearance: The War Games (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

In the 1966 tale “The Highlanders,” set in 18th-century Scotland, Jamie McCrimmon is presented as a bagpipe player belonging to Clan MacLeod. He encounters The Doctor, Ben, and Polly following the Battle of Culloden.

In all stories featuring the Second Doctor, except for his debut, “The Power of the Daleks”, Jamie is present.

In terms of episodes, Jamie is the longest-running companion in Doctor Who history.

Regularly engaging in playful banter, they sometimes disagreed and had their fair share of disputes, the duo being the Second Doctor and the companion in question. Jamie, with his chivalrous demeanor true to his roots, often guarded the female travelers aboard the TARDIS, embodying a refined gentleman.

In the last adventure of the Second Doctor, titled “The War Games” (1969), Jamie exited the TARDIS. This storyline culminated in the Doctor being put on trial by the Time Lords, an event that ultimately resulted in Jamie and his companion Zoe losing all memories about the Doctor’s journeys except for their initial encounters with him.

The story saw Jamie last shown back in the Highlands of Scotland fighting with a redcoat.

Later on, Hines once again took up the role in a magical sense for The Five Doctors (in 1983). Then, in the 1985 tale titled The Two Doctors, he shared screen time with Patrick Troughton, who portrayed the Second Doctor.

In the spin-off series, Tales of the TARDIS, Hines takes on his character again for a special appearance alongside Wendy Padbury, who portrays Zoe Heriot.

Victoria Waterfield

Who plays Victoria Waterfield? Deborah Watling.

First appearance: The Evil of the Daleks

Last appearance: Fury from the Deep

In the 1967 tale “The Evil of the Daleks”, Victorian scientist Edward Waterfield’s daughter, Victoria, becomes part of the team consisting of The Doctor and Jamie, following her father’s demise during their confrontation with the Daleks.

As a cinephile, I find myself deeply concerned for the delicate soul of Victoria, who seems petrified by the world beyond the confines of Victorian England.

In the intriguing tale of “Fury from the Deep,” set in 1968, I find myself, Victoria, realizing that the thrilling, time-traveling life within the TARDIS is not for me. Instead, I opt for a tranquil existence in the 20th century, leaving behind a heartbroken Jamie.

Zoe Heriot

Who plays Zoe Heriot? Wendy Padbury.

First appearance: The Wheel in Space

Last appearance: The War Games

First introduced in the 1968 tale “The Wheel in Space,” Zoe Heriot is a brilliant astrophysicist who joins forces with the Second Doctor and Jamie to combat the menacing Cybermen.

Zoe, who boasts exceptional mathematical skills, makes an excellent sidekick for the Doctor. She yearns for practical, real-life experiences and develops a strong bond with Jamie in the process.

In the 1969 classic The War Games, the character was removed from the series simultaneously with Jamie. This storyline resulted in Zoe and Jamie forgetting most of their experiences with the Doctor, except for their first encounters with him.

In 1983, Padbury once again took on the character in the special episode titled “The Five Doctors”, and also appeared alongside Frazer Hines’ Jamie McCrimmon in the spin-off series called “Tales of the TARDIS”.

Elizabeth “Liz” Shaw

Who plays Liz Shaw? Caroline John.

First appearance: Spearhead from Space

Last appearance: Inferno

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the captivating introduction of Elizabeth “Liz” Shaw in the inaugural tale of the Third Doctor, Spearhead from Space, which premiered back in 1970.

In simpler terms, Liz Shaw serves as a highly intelligent scientific advisor for the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT), recruited by Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart to aid in combating extraterrestrial dangers.

Shaw has expert knowledge of meteorites, physics, medicine, and more.

In the 1971 tale “Terror of the Autons,” we learn that the character leaves the scene, and her departure is explained as a resignation from UNIT. She decided to go back to Cambridge due to her dissatisfaction with life spent aiding the Doctor and his self-centered nature.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

Who plays the Brigadier? Nicholas Courtney.

First appearance: The Web Fear

Last appearance: Battlefield (Doctor Who), Enemy of the Bane (The Sarah Jane Adventures)

In the 1968 tale titled “The Web of Fear,” Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart makes his debut. He is a high-ranking officer in the Scots Guards who leads a British Army unit tasked with probing a mysterious Yeti incident. During this adventure, he assists the Second Doctor.

In the 1968 tale “The Invasion,” the character appeared as the head of UNIT, working alongside the Doctor to combat the Cybermen.

During the travels of the Doctor’s third embodiment, portrayed by John Pertwee, the Brigadier frequently joins him after the Doctor is exiled to Earth. Here, the Doctor assumes the role of a special consultant for UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce).

The character made an appearance starting from the 1975 tale “Terror of the Zygons”. During this time, he assisted the Doctor portrayed by Tom Baker, who was the Fourth Doctor in that specific storyline.

As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself transported back to the captivating world of Doctor Who in 1983, when the Brigadier, an old favorite of mine, reappeared opposite the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison). In this intriguing tale titled Mawdryn Undead, it was revealed that he had left his esteemed position with UNIT to embark on a new career as a math teacher.

In 1983’s special The Five Doctors, the character reappears to assist the Doctors. Later, he makes a guest appearance in the 1989 Seventh Doctor story Battlefield, where he is summoned from retirement to help the Doctor combat a sorceress.

Courtney reprised the role on-screen one last time in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures for the 2008 story Enemy of the Bane where he aids old friend Sarah Jane Smith.

In the 2011 tale titled “The Wedding of River Song,” The Eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith) phones a nursing home where the Brigadier had resided, only to discover that this character passed away several months earlier. However, during their time there, he frequently spoke about the Doctor and expressed a wish for his visit.

The show later introduced the Brigadier’s daughter, Kate Stewart.

Sergeant John Benton

Who plays Sergeant John Benton? John Levene.

First appearance: The Invasion

Last appearance: The Android Invasion

In the 1968 tale titled “The Invasion,” Corporal John Benton, a character from UNIT, made his debut alongside the Second Doctor.

By the 1970s tale “The Ambassadors of Death,” Sergeant Benton had become the consistent sidekick accompanying the Third Doctor in his serial adventures.

Benton assists the Third and Fourth Doctors on their adventures, and he also shows romantic interest towards the Doctor’s companions, Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smith.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I recall Benton’s last cinematic stint in the 1975 production “The Android Invasion.” However, it wasn’t until the 1983 release of “Mawdryn Undead” that I learned he had hung up his director’s hat and retired.

Back in 1988, I had the privilege of starring in the official Doctor Who spin-off short film titled “Wartime,” sharing screen time with none other than the legendary Brigadier himself! What a thrill it was for this die-hard Whovian to be part of such an iconic series’ extended universe.

Captain Mike Yates

Who plays Captain Mike Yates? Richard Franklin.

First appearance: Terror of the Autons

Last appearance: Planet of the Spiders (regular), The Five Doctors (guest)

In the 1971 tale “Terror of the Autons”, Captain Yates is presented as a fellow officer under the command of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Yates assists both the Doctor and UNIT in overcoming various dangers, and at one point, she attempts to court companion Jo Grant.

In contrast, Yates experienced a transformative event in the 1973 narrative The Green Death. He was subjected to brainwashing at the hands of the malevolent BOSS and subsequently became gripped with fear over impending environmental catastrophe. This fear led him to align with a plot to rewind Earth’s timeline in the 1974 tale, Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

As a movie enthusiast, after being pitted against the Doctor and failing in my efforts, I was granted leniency by the Brigadier. Instead of facing harsher consequences, he graciously permitted me to step down from UNIT, sparing me from additional repercussions.

In the same year, Yates sought medical help at a healthcare facility, which ultimately allowed him to share valuable insights with Sarah Jane Smith within the narrative titled “Planet of the Spiders.

In 1983, Richard Franklin played the character Yates once more, this time as a hallucination, in the special episode titled “The Five Doctors.

Jo Grant

Who plays Jo Grant? Katy Manning.

First appearance: Terror of the Autons

Last appearance: The Green Death (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

Jo Grant is first presented in the 1971 tale “Terror of the Autons” as a junior civilian staff member for UNIT. During her tenure, she functions as a relatively inexperienced joint lead character alongside Jon Pertwee’s portrayal of the Third Doctor.

Following the Time Lords granting him the ability to traverse through time and various galaxies once more, Jo embarks on numerous journeys alongside the Doctor, encountering hostile extraterrestrial realms, battling adversaries such as the Master and the Daleks along the way.

A bubbly and compassionate figure, Jo grows very protective of the Doctor and he does in turn.

In the 1973 tale “The Green Death,” Jo develops feelings for a scientist and environmentalist named Professor Clifford Jones, ultimately choosing to part ways with the Doctor to marry him and collaborate with him in the Amazon. The Doctor appears happy for her but also feels a pang of sorrow upon her departure.

Katy Manning once again took on the role in the offshoot series The Sarah Jane Adventures for the 2010 episode titled “The Death of the Doctor,” where she crossed paths with her successor companion Sarah Jane Smith and subsequently reconnected with the Doctor himself. In another context, Jo Jones is disclosed to have seven children and twelve grandchildren alongside her husband Clifford, both persistently advocating for environmental issues together.

In the 2022 Doctor Who special titled “The Power of the Doctor,” the actress reprised her role as Jo, and later, she made a guest appearance in an episode entitled “Tales from the TARDIS.

Sarah Jane Smith

Who plays Sarah Jane Smith? Elisabeth Sladen.

First appearance: The Time Warrior

Last appearance: The End of Time (Doctor Who), The Man Who Never Was (The Sarah Jane Adventures)

In the 1973 story “The Time Warrior,” Elizabeth Sladen first appeared on Doctor Who as the character Sarah Jane Smith, one of the show’s most memorable companions.

At first, Sarah Jane was alongside Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor. After his regeneration into Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, she continued her journey with him. She displayed a knack for being curious, courageous, and compassionate throughout their adventures together.

Sarah Jane stayed with the Doctor until he accidentally left her in Aberdeen instead of Croydon during the 1976 episode “The Hand of Fear.” They didn’t reconnect for many years to follow.

In 1981, Sladen took on her role once more for the debut of the spin-off series titled K-9 and Company. During this series, she embarked on various adventures alongside the robotic canine known as K9, a gadget she received from the Doctor.

In the role I play, I made a comeback in the 1983 special titled “The Five Doctors” and subsequently reappeared in the charitable production known as “Dimensions in Time,” which was a delightful experience for both me and the fans alike.

In 2005, I was thrilled to see my beloved series brought back to life by the skillful hands of showrunner Russell T Davies. It was an unforgettable moment when I, Sarah Jane, made a triumphant return to the screen in the 2006 episode School Reunion, sharing it with David Tennant’s extraordinary Tenth Doctor and the ever-loyal K9.

Sarah Jane’s highly anticipated comeback spawned a standalone series entitled “The Sarah Jane Adventures.” In this show, she took on the task of protecting Earth alongside brave teenagers, among them her adoptive son Luke.

In the year 2008, the character revisited Doctor Who in episodes titled “The Stolen Earth” and “Journey’s End,” assisting the Tenth Doctor and his fellow travelers in their struggle against the Daleks.

In the two-part series “The End of Time,” which marked David Tennant’s last performance as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who (2009-2010), Sarah Jane made a brief appearance during the final scenes of the second episode.

As a die-hard Whovian, I’ve been enthralled by the five-season journey of a beloved character’s standalone show. It was a treat to see iconic Doctor Who figures grace our screens, alongside the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors themselves. However, the series came to an abrupt end with its fifth season, coinciding with the tragic loss of Elisabeth Sladen due to cancer at the tender age of 65.

Dr. Harry Sullivan

Who plays Harry Sullivan? Ian Marter.

First appearance: Robot

Last appearance: The Android Invasion

Harry Sullivan, a military doctor serving as a Surgeon-Lieutenant, is first presented in the 1974 tale “Robot,” while working alongside UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce).

With Sarah Jane Smith by his side, Harry plays the role of companion to Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor. He seems traditional, courageous, yet somewhat accident-prone.

The character was written out in the 1975 story Terror of the Zygons as he returned to London.

However, Marter reprised the role in a guest appearance later that year in The Android Invasion.

Leela

Who plays Leela? Louise Jameson.

First appearance: The Face of Evil

Last appearance: The Invasion of Time

In the 1977 tale “The Face of Evil,” we’re first introduced to Leela. She hails from the fierce Sevateem tribe, a group whose ancestors were the human crew of a spaceship from Earth, which had crash-landed on an uncharted planet in a distant future.

With determination, Leela forcefully enters the TARDIS and joins the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) on his exciting journeys.

Leela stayed with the Doctor until her departure in the 1978 tale “The Invasion of Time.” In this story, she chose to stay on Gallifrey alongside Andred, a resident of the Doctor’s home planet, following Louise Jameson’s decision to leave the series.

K9

Who voices K9? John Leeson, David Brierley, Roy Skelton.

First appearance: The Invisible Enemy

Last appearance: Journey’s End (Doctor Who), Goodbye Sarah Jane Smith (The Sarah Jane Adventures)

In the 1977 tale “The Invisible Enemy,” a robotic canine named K9 is first presented. This mechanical pet was developed by Professor Marius, or Frederick Jaeger, in the year 5000.

The character embarks on journeys alongside the Doctor and Leela earlier, eventually departing with her in “The Invasion of Time” towards the end of the same year.

1978 saw the introduction of a revised ‘Mark II’ model in The Ribos Operation, but this version parted ways from the series along with its companion Romana (played by Lalla Ward) during the tale of Warrior’s Gate in 1981.

In the premiere of his own series ‘K-9 and Company’ featuring Sarah Jane Smith, a new version called ‘Mark III’ is presented. Later, in the 2006 story ‘School Reunion’, Mark III meets its end and is subsequently replaced by Mark IV.

– In 2008, the character makes a short reappearance in the episode titled “Journey’s End,” and later appears in the spin-off show, “The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Romana I

Who plays Romana I? Mary Tamm.

First appearance: The Ribos Operation

Last appearance: The Armageddon Factor

Romana is a Time Lady who is introduced in the 1978 story The Ribos Operation, played by Mary Tamm.

The character is a cool and clever figure, tasked with collaborating with the Doctor, as assigned by other Time Lords, in an epic storyline aimed at retrieving the Key of Time.

The pair don’t get on initially but soon grow to have a warmer relationship.

In 1979, when Tom Baker decided to hang up his scarf and depart from the Doctor Who series, the character of Romana underwent a transformation known as regeneration. This metamorphosis resulted in the arrival of Princess Astra, a character I had previously encountered, played by the talented Lalla Ward. It was an exciting change for me, as a film enthusiast, to witness this new incarnation unfold on screen.

Romana II

Who plays Romana II? Lalla Ward.

First appearance: Destiny of the Daleks

Last appearance: Warrior’s Gate

In the series, the character named Romana II is a bolder and more independent version of the Time Lady who traveled alongside the Fourth Doctor, portrayed by Tom Baker, compared to the original Romana.

In my humble critique, I must say that the actress who donned the role of Princess Astra in “The Armageddon Factor” back in 1979, has now reappeared as a new character following a transformation – none other than Romana herself, post-regeneration.

Romana shares an exceptionally warm and playful bond with the Fourth Doctor, and their connection sometimes hints at a romantic undertone, much like the actual marriage between actors Tom Baker and Lalla Ward (who played Romana), which lasted from 1980 to 1982.

In the tale of Warrior’s Gate from 1981, I found myself embarking on an extraordinary journey into the enigmatic realm of E-Space. There, I made the decision to remain, alongside my trusted companion K9, choosing to forge a new path in this unfamiliar dimension.

Adric

Who plays Adric? Matthew Waterhouse.

First appearance: Full Circle

Last appearance: Earthshock

A character named Adric, hailing from the planet Alzarius, is introduced in the 1980s series Full Circle. He’s not just any character, but an exceptionally brilliant mathematician.

In the alternate dimension known as E-Space, Adric embarks on journeys with the Doctor, eventually becoming a traveling companion to both the Fourth Doctor (portrayed by Tom Baker) and the Fifth Doctor (played by Peter Davison).

In the 1982 episode titled “Earthshock,” Adric continues to be a part of the series. Tragically, he meets his end when he sacrifices himself in an attempt to prevent a Cybermen spaceship from colliding with Earth. This heart-wrenching moment leaves both the Doctor and their companions, Tegan and Nyssa, utterly shocked.

As the freighter remains a mystery, potentially holding the key to whether it could have been the meteor that ended the dinosaurs’ reign and allowed for mammals and humans to thrive on Earth, Adric’s final words before his death are: “Now I’ll never learn if I was correct.

In the time that followed, Adric’s demise lingered heavily on the Doctor, a fact that resurfaced in the spin-off show Tales from the TARDIS. This series brought together once more the Fifth Doctor and Tegan Jovanka.

Nyssa

Who plays Nyssa? Sarah Sutton.

First appearance: The Keeper of Traken

Last appearance: Terminus (regular), The Caves of Androzani (guest)

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself captivated by an elegant extraterrestrial being hailing from the distant world of Traken – Nyssa. This regal character made her debut in the captivating tale titled “The Keeper of Traken” back in 1981.

Following the murder of Nyssa’s stepmother, the wicked Master manipulated Nyssa psychologically and seized control over her father’s physical form. Later, Nyssa was transported to the planet Logopolis by a Doctor incarnation called ‘The Watcher.’ There, she discovered that Nyssa’s homeworld, Traken, had been annihilated.

Following this, Nyssa teams up with the Doctor, Adric, and a fresh traveler named Tegan for their escapades. She also confronts The Master – who bears her father’s visage – just prior to the Fourth Doctor transforming into the Fifth.

In my account, I’ve been accompanying the remarkable Doctor on his travels through time and space. For a spell, we ventured together independently, but our paths diverged in the 1983 tale known as Terminus. Moved by compassion, I chose to remain behind on the titular space station ravaged by a plague. With tears in my eyes and a heart heavy with affection, I bid farewell to the Doctor and shared a tender kiss, hoping that our paths would cross again someday.

In the tale “The Caves of Androzani” from 1984, the character reappeared to the Fifth Doctor in a state of hallucination during his regeneration process.

In 1993, Sarah Sutton resumed her character in the charitable production titled “Dimensions in Time,” and also appeared in an exclusive bonus episode for the high-definition DVD release of the original series’ Season 20.

Tegan Jovanka

Who plays Tegan Jovanka? Janet Fielding.

First appearance: Logopolis

Last appearance: Resurrection of the Daleks (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

Tegan Jovanka, an Australian flight attendant, was first introduced in the last tale featuring the Fourth Doctor during the year 1981’s Logopolis.

Headstrong and impulsive, Tegan encounters the TARDIS when her aunt’s vehicle experiences trouble along the roadside, prompting her to seek assistance within. Tragically losing her aunt to The Master, Tegan teams up with The Doctor, Adric, and Nyssa on their travels; however, she maintains her intention to return to work at Heathrow Airport.

Tegan frequently engages in discussions with the Doctor and Adric, maintains a wary stance towards Turlough, and shares a strong bond with Nyssa, feeling sorrowful as she departs from the TARDIS permanently.

Following a miscommunication, Tegan exits the TARDIS momentarily upon finding herself stranded at Heathrow Airport. However, in the subsequent narrative, which unfolds a year later, she reappears once more.

In the tale “Resurrection of the Daleks” from 1984, the character ultimately decides to depart permanently as the distressing incidents become too overwhelming for her to endure further journeys within the TARDIS.

In 2022’s special “The Power of the Doctor,” actress Janet Fielding once again stepped into the role of Tegan, this time assisting the Thirteenth Doctor in her adventures.

As I delved into the bonus material of the recently launched blu-ray edition for Season 20 of the timeless Doctor Who series, I found myself witnessing a heartwarming reunion between my contemporary self, Tegan, and an old acquaintance, Nyssa.

The character returned in the spin-off series Tales of the TARDIS opposite The Fifth Doctor.

Vislor Turlough

Who plays Vislor Turlough? Mark Strickson.

First appearance: Mawdryn Undead

Last appearance: Planet of Fire

In the 1983 tale titled “Mawdryn Undead,” the character Vislor Turlough first appears, having been secretly schooled by the Brigadier at Brendon School.

It eventually becomes evident that Turlough is concealing some information, and the wicked Black Guardian (Valentine Dyall) tasks him with slaying the Doctor. However, Turlough agrees to this assignment only if he’s permitted to return to his original dwelling place.

Accepting an invitation to travel in the TARDIS with the Doctor, Turlough travels with the Time Lord and his companions, eventually rejecting the Black Guardian and choosing to stand by the Doctor.

In due course, I unveil my own background: I’m Vislor, a junior commander from the planet Trion, who had been detained politically and managed to flee to Earth. As events unfolded, I learned that life on Trion had seen some improvements. With this knowledge, I decided to return home in the 1984 tale, Planet of Fire.

Kamelion

Who plays Kamelion? Gerald Flood (voice).

First appearance: The King’s Demons

Last appearance: Planet of Fire

In the 1983 tale “The King’s Demons,” which unfolds in medieval England on Earth, a versatile android capable of assuming different forms, called Kamelion, makes its debut. This android was crafted by The Master.

In simpler terms, the Doctor successfully liberates Kamelion from serving the Master, and Kamelion then travels with the Doctor up until the 1984 tale titled “Planet of Fire.” However, in this story, the Master regains control over Kamelion once more.

Desiring freedom from the control of the Master once more, Kamelion implores the Doctor to terminate him, and the Doctor complies, resulting in his demise.

Peri Brown

Who plays Peri Brown? Nicola Bryant.

First appearance: Planet of Fire

Last appearance: The Trial of a Time Lord: Mindwarp (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

1984’s science fiction tale, “Planet of Fire,” introduces Peri Brown, a botany major from California, as she crosses paths with the Fifth Doctor and Turlough.

Following Turlough’s exit from the TARDIS, the lively and eager Peri expresses her desire to accompany the Doctor on his journeys instead.

During a desperate situation, the Fifth Doctor voluntarily gives up his life to ensure Peri’s safety, triggering his regeneration. As a result, Peri finds herself as the initial companion of the Sixth Doctor (played by Colin Baker), who momentarily loses control and attempts to harm her following his regeneration.

Eventually, the character bids farewell to the series as part of the extended narrative titled “The Trial of a Time Lord,” which unfolded in 1986.

During the adventure known as Mindwarp, Peri gets abducted. The consciousness of the being called Kiv is then moved into her physical form, leading to a tumultuous interaction that appears to end with her death.

Near the close of the season, it is revealed to the Doctor that Peri’s demise was actually a ruse orchestrated by a future version of the Doctor called ‘The Valeyard’. This deception allowed for her survival, and subsequently, she married King Yrcanos of Thoros Alpha (portrayed by Brian Blessed), an event that transpired off-screen.

In an exciting turn of events, I found myself stepping back into my old shoes once more, this time as Peri Brown in the captivating spin-off series, Tales from the TARDIS, sharing the screen with the brilliant and charismatic Colin Baker, portraying the Sixth Doctor.

Melanie “Mel” Bush

Who plays Mel Bush? Bonnie Langford.

First appearance: The Trial of a Time Lord: Terror of the Vervoids

Last appearance: Dragonfire (regular), The Power of the Doctor (guest)

In the 1986 season “The Trial of a Time Lord,” we’re first introduced to the witty and clever computer programmer, Melanie Bush, who hails from Sussex during the 20th Century.

Mel encounters the Sixth Doctor through a holographic representation of future occurrences, demonstrating her journeys alongside him.

Later on, Mel encounters the Sixth Doctor for the first time (according to her chronology), and she decides to accompany him on his journeys.

After the Doctor transforms into the Seventh Doctor (portrayed by Sylvester McCoy), the character stays by his side.

Mel stays with the Doctor up until the 1987 tale, “Dragonfire”. At this point, she departs from him to voyage aboard the spacecraft Nosferatu II, accompanied by her old contact and hired gun, Sabalom Glitz.

In the 2022 special titled “The Power of the Doctor,” actress Bonnie Langford once again took on her character’s role, making a brief and memorable guest appearance.

Langford is set to return as Mel once more for the forthcoming 14th season starring Ncuti Gatwa’s version of the Fourteenth Doctor. Additionally, viewers anticipate that she may make an appearance in the 60th anniversary special episodes.

Ace

Who plays Ace? Sophie Aldred.

First appearance: Dragonfire

Last appearance: Survival (regular), Tales of the TARDIS (guest)

In the 1987 tale titled Dragonfire, we meet Ace, a troubled teen from London who was once the final companion of the classic series. Her story begins when she’s transported to the frigid planet Svartos, where she works as a waitress. It is on this wintry world that Ace encounters the Seventh Doctor and agrees to join him on his travels in the TARDIS following his departure from Mel.

In a heartwarming turn of events, the duo forge a strong connection as Ace endearingly refers to the Doctor as “Professor,” showing her concern and desire to shield him. Simultaneously, the Doctor endeavors to guide and support her, taking into account her challenging history marked by strained relations with her mother and the racially charged firebombing of her friend Manisha when she was 13 years old.

Armed with a baseball bat and explosives, Ace is more than capable of defending herself.

The last time we saw Ace regularly on screen was during the final episode of the classic show, titled “Survival.” In this episode, Ace and the Doctor confronted their adversary, the Master. Afterwards, Ace decided to leave Perivale behind and rejoin the Doctor’s travels. They separated sometime between the original series ending and the TV movie.

In the 2022 special “The Power of the Doctor,” actress Sophie Aldred returned to her character’s central role, reuniting with the Doctor in their Thirteenth form, portrayed by Jodie Whittaker. Previously, Ace and the Doctor had a disagreement that led to a separation; however, in this story, they make up, and Ace teams up with Tegan Jovanka to help the Doctor again.

As a devoted film buff, I was thrilled to reappear in an episode of the spin-off series “Tales from the TARDIS,” sharing screen time with the talented Sylvester McCoy portraying the Seventh Doctor.

Dr. Grace Holloway

Who plays Dr. Grace Holloway? Daphne Ashbrook.

First appearance: Doctor Who (1996)

Last appearance: Doctor Who (1996)

In the 1996 television movie titled Doctor Who, Dr. Grace Holloway takes on the role of the main traveling partner for the Eighth Doctor, portrayed by Paul McGann.

In 1999, a compassionate cardiologist named Grace, residing in San Francisco, unintentionally ends the life of the Seventh Doctor while attempting to save him. This tragic event unfolds after he’s been shot and brought to her hospital. However, his unusual alien anatomy posed challenges during the rescue effort.

After the Doctor regenerates, Grace aids him in his fight against The Master.

Towards the conclusion of the tale, Grace refuses the Doctor’s invitation to journey aboard the TARDIS, yet they do exchange a kiss.

“I finally meet the right guy and he’s from another planet,” she notes of her time with the Doctor.

Chang Lee

Who plays Chang Lee? Yee Jee Tso.

First appearance: Doctor Who (1996)

Last appearance: Doctor Who (1996)

Asian-American gangster Chang Lee is introduced in the TV movie Doctor Who.

Regardless of whether or not Chang Lee’s role as a companion is universally accepted, he is frequently viewed as an exceptional case: a character who associates with both the Doctor and the Master.

Members of a gang were trying to assassinate Lee, but instead, they shot the Seventh Doctor, thereby initiating his next transformation (regeneration).

Following the Time Lord’s supposed demise, Lee acquired the Doctor’s possessions. Subsequently, he discovered the TARDIS, which led him to come under the sway of the Master. Influenced by the Master, Lee assisted with his devious plans.

Nevertheless, following his encounters with the Eighth Doctor, Lee eventually aids the Doctor against the Master, resulting in the Master breaking Lee’s neck.

By the stroke of New Year’s Eve 2000, the doctor miraculously brought Lee back to life, only to bid him a heartfelt goodbye on the first day of the new millennium. However, with a sense of concern, I urged Lee to steer clear of San Francisco in the year that followed.

Rose Tyler

Who plays Rose Tyler? Billie Piper.

First appearance: Rose

Last appearance: Doomsday (regular), The End of Time (guest)

In the premiere episode of the rebooted show in 2005, Rose Tyler was initially presented as an ordinary shop assistant. However, things changed when she crossed paths with the Ninth Doctor, portrayed by Christopher Eccleston.

In the spirit of a genuine joint star of the show, the series brought in Rose’s mother, Jackie (played by Camille Coduri), and her boyfriend, Mickey Smith (portrayed by Noel Clarke).

Rose journeys alongside the Ninth Doctor on numerous escapades, culminating in a conflict against the Daleks where she takes on the “Bad Wolf” identity after assimilating power from the Time Vortex. However, the Doctor eventually rescues her by taking upon himself a lethal amount of energy that was surging through her body.

After the Ninth Doctor transformed into the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, their bond deepened even more, culminating in the development of a romantic relationship between them.

In the 2006 episode titled “Doomsday”, Rose finds herself stranded in a different dimension, causing her to part ways with the Doctor under heartrending circumstances.

In the year 2008, the character made her reappearance with an intention to shield the Doctor and prevent the impending darkness across all universes, a threat instigated by Davros and the Daleks.

Following this tale, Rose bids farewell to the Doctor yet another time, but finds a joyful conclusion when she receives a human replica of the Tenth Doctor instead.

In 2010, Billie Piper reappeared as Rose in David Tennant’s swansong story, “The End of Time.” During this tale, the Tenth Doctor briefly encountered Rose before she initially met him in her own timeline.

2013 saw Piper once again embody her character in the 50th anniversary special titled “The Day of the Doctor.” However, she portrayed Rose’s Bad Wolf persona, as the intelligent weapon called ‘The Moment‘ assumed this form to converse with the War Doctor (John Hurt).

Adam Mitchell

Who plays Adam Mitchell? Bruno Langley.

First appearance: Dalek

Last appearance: The Long Game

Back in 2005, I found myself stepping into the world of science fiction as Adam Mitchell, a character previously portrayed by Bruno Langley on Coronation Street. In the captivating tale of Dalek, I teamed up with the Doctor and formed an endearing bond with Rose, aiding them in their adventures.

Next, the character journeys alongside the Doctor and Rose inside the TARDIS to Satellite 5, a location from the year 200,000. There, Adam aims to integrate a sophisticated computer interface into his brain and plans to transmit data back to his mother’s phone in the 21st century via this method.

Towards the close of The Long Game tale, the Doctor brings Adam back home and erases the message, growing irate due to Adam trying to exploit his journeys for self-gain. Yet, Adam’s advanced computer interface entry point, which holds no value in today’s era, remains open on his forehead and reveals his brain with a mere finger click, causing extreme fright in his mother.

Captain Jack Harkness

Who plays Captain Jack Harkness? John Barrowman.

First appearance: The Empty Child

Last appearance: Rev0lution of the Daleks

In the 2005 narrative titled The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, we’re first introduced to Captain Jack Harkness, a character hailing from the 51st century. At that time, he was serving as a volunteer in the British Royal Air Force, although his true origins were as a Time Agent.

In a friendly manner, Jack, who identifies as omnisexual, attempts to court both the Ninth Doctor and Rose. They eventually embark on journeys together within the TARDIS until Jack’s demise in the 2005 finale The Parting of the Ways on Satellite 5. As the episode nears its end, Rose revives Jack using the Time Vortex’s power, but she and the Doctor exit Satellite 5 unaware that Jack was still among the living.

Afterward, the character assumed the main role in the offshoot show named Torchwood, where they headed a group of operatives tasked with safeguarding Earth against both extraterrestrial and mystical perils.

In the 2007 episode “Utopia,” Jack reappeared as Doctor Who, unveiling that he had employed a time-travel device called a vortex manipulator to travel back to Earth in the year 1869. However, after his resurrection, he gained immortality.

As an ardent movie enthusiast, I find myself spending my earthly days surrounded by loved ones and, moreover, as a member of the illustrious Torchwood team. My journey intertwines with that of the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones, where together we stand against the formidable adversary, the Master, in our tireless pursuit of peace and justice.

After its initial run, Torchwood persisted as a television series, featuring Jack Harkness in a romantic involvement with fellow team member Ianto Jones. Their relationship flourished until Ianto’s demise in the miniseries titled Torchwood: Children of Earth. The program also delved into Jack’s past love affairs, personal history, and familial background.

Later on, actor John Barrowman reappeared as character Jack in the episodes titled “The Stolen Earth” and “Journey’s End,” which were aired in 2008. He also made a brief appearance in the 2010 episode called “The End of Time: Part Two,” sharing screen time with the Tenth Doctor.

In the year 2011, Jack made his reappearance during the fourth installment of Torchwood, titled “Miracle Day”. Later on, he had a special appearance in the Doctor Who episode “Fugitive of the Judoon” that was broadcasted in 2020.

In the 2021 special titled “Revolution of the Daleks”, John Barrowman portrayed Captain Jack Harkness once again. This time, he appeared alongside the Thirteenth Doctor. In this story, Captain Jack chose to stay on Earth and rekindle his friendship with Gwen Cooper, a fellow Torchwood team member, played by Eve Myles.

Mickey Smith

Who plays Mickey Smith? Noel Clarke.

First appearance: Rose

Last appearance: The End of Time

First appeared in the 2005 episode ‘Rose’, Mickey Smith was introduced as Rose Tyler’s boyfriend. He reappears throughout the series, dealing with her journey alongside the Ninth Doctor and the pain of a broken heart.

In various tales, Mickey assists the Doctor prior to eventually electing to embark on numerous journeys with the Tenth Doctor and Rose in the 2006 series. This continued until he opted to remain in a parallel Earth universe in the Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel two-parter, seeking a new beginning.

In the final episode of the same season, the character reappeared to aid the Doctor and Rose again. Furthermore, this character stood by Rose when she became separated from the Doctor.

In 2008, Clarke once again took on the character of Mickey in the tale titled “The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End,” where he eventually made his way back to his original universe. He also made a brief appearance in The Tenth Doctor’s swan song, The End of Time, during which it was unveiled that Mickey had wed fellow ex-companion Dr. Martha Jones and now collaborated with her to combat extraterrestrial threats.

Donna Noble

Who plays Donna Noble? Catherine Tate.

First appearance: Doomsday

In the concluding part of the 2006 episode titled “Doomsday”, the talkative temporary employee, Donna Noble, was introduced. Later in the year’s Christmas special, she assumed the role of companion to the Tenth Doctor, as she was famously known as ‘The Runaway Bride.’

After wrapping up this joyful journey, Donna opted out of accompanying the Doctor into the TARDIS, as he was still mourning the passing of Rose.

Later on, Donna found herself regretting that choice and reached out to the Doctor again. Their reunion happened during the 2008 series, where she took on the role of a permanent traveling companion for the Doctor and eventually became his closest friend.

After her journeys with the Doctor, Donna ultimately discovered a sense of self-worth and self-respect. Yet, this wasn’t the end of her extraordinary tale; she turned out to be instrumental in saving the universe itself. This was achieved when she triggered a unique event known as a “meta-crisis” between Time Lords and humans, by bonding with the Doctor’s regenerating hand.

In the 2008 series finale, Journey’s End, although Donna helped save countless universes, her brain struggled with Time Lord knowledge. The Doctor was forced to erase her memories of their adventures together in order to protect her from mental overload and she ultimately left the show.

Following her homecoming in Chiswick, actress Catherine Tate once again took on her role in the 2009/2010 narrative titled “The End of Time.” However, despite this reappearance, her character didn’t recover her memories of the Doctor. In the story’s conclusion, as a farewell gesture to her, the Doctor assisted her family in winning the lottery.

In the 60th-anniversary specials, Tate once again takes on the character of Donna opposite David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. The story begins with “The Star Beast” and ends with “The Laugh”.

Dr. Martha Jones

Who Dr. Martha Jones? Freema Agyeman.

First appearance: Smith and Jones

Last appearance: Journey’s End (regular), The End of Time (guest)

The 2007 episode Smith and Jones saw the Doctor meet another doctor, human doctor Martha Jones.

Following the mission to bring a hospital back to Earth, Martha decided to embark on journeys with the Doctor. Along the way, she successfully rescued her own family, the Doctor, and even managed to save the world from the Master.

By the end of the 2007 season, Martha’s unfulfilled affection for the Doctor grew unbearably distressing, as she believed she would always fall short compared to Rose in his thoughts. In an effort to move on, Martha decided to go back to her life on Earth.

For certain episodes during the 2008 season, the character transitioned into a UNIT agent role, and was later seen in Torchwood’s second season working alongside Captain Jack Harkness.

In the 2010 episode titled “The End of Time: Part Two,” Freema Agyeman made her last appearance in a brief role, portraying a character who had married her old companion Mickey Smith. Together, they were depicted as battling alien threats.

Astrid Peth

Who plays Astrid Peth? Kylie Minogue.

First appearance: Voyage of the Damned

Last appearance: Voyage of the Damned

In 2007, Australian pop sensation Kylie Minogue played a supporting role in the Christmas special titled “Voyage of the Damned.

On board a spacecraft modeled after the Titanic, named the Luxury Space Liner, there was a vibrant young woman named Astrid, full of ambition and aspirations. She had dreams that extended beyond her current role as a waitress, and she even harbored plans to journey with the Doctor.

Nevertheless, Astrid gave up her own life to save many others during this thrilling journey. In the end, the Doctor found a way to keep Astrid alive as stardust, ensuring she remains part of the cosmos forever.

Jackson Lane

Who plays Jackson Lane? David Morrissey.

First appearance: The Next Doctor

Last appearance: The Next Doctor

To start with, the character known as ‘The Doctor’ is first featured in the 2008 Christmas episode titled “The Next Doctor”.

It turns out that although Lane seemed like another version of The Doctor at first, he was actually a Victorian human who had been given The Doctor’s memories by the Cybermen.

In due course, Lane assists the Tenth Doctor in overcoming the Cybermen, recovers his lost memories, and reconnects with his son. Ultimately, the Doctor and Jackson share a Christmas meal together.

Rosita Farisi

Who plays Rosita Farisi? Velile Tshabalala.

First appearance: The Next Doctor

Last appearance: The Next Doctor

In the story, Rosita Farisi, a bold and spirited character from the streets of London, teams up with Jackson Lane and steps in to help the Tenth Doctor fight off the Cybermen.

Following the defeat of the Cybermen, Rosita goes to live with Jackson and his son.

Lady Christina de Souza

Who plays Lady Christina de Souza? Michelle Ryan.

First appearance: Planet of the Dead

Last appearance: Planet of the Dead

In the 2009 special “Planet of the Dead,” the cunning and graceful burglar, Lady Christina de Souza, joins forces with the Tenth Doctor, posing as his companion.

Christina eventually catches up with the Doctor and company following their teleportation aboard a bus to the sand-filled world of San Helios, where they unite forces to confront an extraterrestrial menace. However, it’s revealed that the very same chalice which Christina had pilfered in the past is later used – much to the Doctor’s dismay.

In the end, the story unfolds with the Doctor choosing to let Christina avoid capture as they successfully make the bus airborne.

Captain Adelaide Brooke

Who plays Adelaide Brooke? Lindsay Duncan.

First appearance: The Waters of Mars

Last appearance: The Waters of Mars

In the year 2059, the Tenth Doctor encounters the firm Captain Adelaide Brooke at the Mars space station, which is called Bowie Base One.

In the 2009 special “The Waters of Mars,” it’s unveiled that Adelaide plays a crucial role in human history, as her demise on the space station ultimately motivates her granddaughter to venture into space and further humanity’s development.

In this manner, the doctor has to accept her destiny yet understands its significance as a “pivotal moment” in historical events.

Instead, as the tale nears its conclusion, the Doctor changes his stance and misuses his authority, proclaiming himself ‘The Time Lord Triumphant’. He allows the station to be annihilated, along with an extraterrestrial menace aboard, but manages to rescue Adelaide and her crew.

Understanding the gravity of her situation, Adelaide chooses to end her life at home, leaving the Doctor shocked but enlightened about his mistakes.

Wilfred Mott

Who plays Wilfred Mott? Bernard Cribbins.

First appearance: Voyage of the Damned

Last appearance: Wild Blue Yonder

In a previous turn, Bernard Cribbins, an experienced actor, made an appearance in a secondary role during the 2007 Christmas special titled Voyage of the Damned. Later, in the 2008 series, he reprised his character, Wilfred Mott. It was then unveiled that this character was none other than Donna Noble’s grandfather.

In the 2008 show, Wilfred was frequently featured, and by the end of the series, he was distraught because his granddaughter Donna failed to remember their life-altering journeys with the Doctor.

During the 2009-2010 series finale titled “The End of Time,” the charming character Wilfred played a pivotal role alongside the Doctor, engaging in a battle against both the Master and, subsequently, the Time Lords.

In a selfless act, the Tenth Doctor gave up his life to protect Wilfred, which then triggered his regeneration. Prior to his passing, the Tenth Doctor passed on a lucky lottery ticket to Wilfred’s kin.

In the special anniversary episodes, the late Cribbins once again takes on the character of Wilfred, this time alongside Catherine Tate as Donna and David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. Notably, Wilf is back in the storyline titled “Wild Blue Yonder.

The filming was completed before Cribbins passed away at 93 in 2022, and the episode “Wild Blue Yonder” includes a heartfelt tribute to this cherished actor. (This paraphrase maintains the original meaning while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.)

Amelia “Amy” Pond

Who plays Amy Pond? Karen Gillan.

First appearance: The Eleventh Hour

Last appearance: The Angels Take Manhattan (regular), The Time of the Doctor (guest)

In the 2010 episode titled “The Eleventh Hour”, we’re introduced to Amelia Pond, an orphaned girl who happened to be the first person encountered by the Eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith). He made a promise to travel with her, but he mysteriously vanished and didn’t return – not until she had grown into a spirited woman.

Afterward, Amy embarked on journeys alongside the Doctor, and eventually, her partner, Rory Williams, joined them as they became husband and wife.

As a film enthusiast, I uncovered later on that the character Amy harbored a secret daughter named Melody Pond, who ultimately revealed herself as the time-traveler known as River Song.

In several instances, Amy and Rory bid farewell to the Doctor, but their permanent separation occurred in the 2012 episode “The Angels Take Manhattan.” During this episode, a Weeping Angel sent Rory back in time, and Amy, deeply moved by the situation, decided to follow him. Since they were trapped in that specific moment in history, they spent the remainder of their lives together in the past.

In the 2013 Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor,” I, Karen Gillan, stepped back into the role of Amy Pond to make an appearance as a hallucination, just before Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor underwent regeneration.

Rory Williams

Who plays Rory Williams? Arthur Darvill.

First appearance: The Eleventh Hour

Last appearance: The Angels Take Manhattan

In the 2010 season, I stepped into the role of Amy Pond’s boyfriend, a kind-hearted nurse named Rory Williams. Later on, I was fortunate enough to travel with the Doctor inside the TARDIS. This companionship continued until my character met an end in the Cold Blood episode.

Instead, let me rephrase it for you: In the last episodes of that same season, the character came back in a grand way and, after waiting centuries, finally reunited with Amy. They got married at the end of the 2010 finale, The Big Bang, and welcomed a baby in the next 2011 season. However, it was later discovered that this child was none other than River Song.

In various instances, Amy and Rory departed from the Doctor, but they had a permanent farewell in the 2012 episode “The Angels Take Manhattan.” Rory was unwillingly sent back in time by a Weeping Angel, and deeply moved by this, Amy decided to follow him. Since they were confined to that specific time period, they spent the rest of their lives together in the past.

It struck me as an incredibly impactful, startling, unexpected, and saddening event. However, Karen Gillan, or Kazza as you called her, had been adamant about not reading it for a long time. What made me eager to converse with her was the fact that this incident pertained to us both.

Each time I broached the subject with her, she’d express a sentiment like, “I haven’t quite managed to get around to reading it just yet,” which was endearingly thoughtful. However, when I gently emphasized that we were due to start filming it in a week, my words were met with, “You have to read it first!

Professor River Song (Melody Pond)

Who plays River Song? Alex Kingston.

First appearance: Silence in the Library

Last appearance: The Husbands of River Song

First appeared as a supporting character in the 2008 stories “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead,” Professor River Song had a significant role to play in the Tenth Doctor’s life, yet to unfold in his timeline.

Instead, it was their initial meeting that proved to be their final interaction, as he passed away in the same narrative. Remarkably, her awareness was kept alive within a digital reality.

In the 2010 season, the character reappeared as a regular companion to the Doctor, unveiling her true self as Amy Pond and Rory Williams’ time-traveling daughter with the power of regeneration over the subsequent year. In the 2011 episode The Wedding of River Song, she married the Doctor.

In the 2013 episode titled “The Name of the Doctor,” the character had a significant conversation with the Eleventh Doctor, taking place within her own timeline, using a digital representation of herself.

In the 2015 Christmas special “The Husbands of River Song,” River Song reappeared, serving as the main companion to the Twelfth Doctor. This event took place prior to her character’s demise.

In the tenth installment, The Doctor is depicted having a framed picture of River and an image of his granddaughter, Susan, on his office desk while he’s engaged in work at a university.

Craig Owens

Who plays Craig Owens? James Corden.

First appearance: The Lodger

Last appearance: Closing Time

As an avid film enthusiast, I found myself sharing living quarters with the Eleventh Doctor in the 2010 episode “The Lodger.

In the house, it’s the upstairs apartment that has become the focus of investigation and speculation for the new doctor. As he settles in, he forms a friendship with Craig as part of his exploration.

The Doctor motivates jittery Craig to pursue his aspirations of voyaging and nurturing his platonic bond with his colleague, Sophie.

Ultimately, Craig’s deep affection for Sophie played a crucial role in averting the disaster caused by the extraterrestrial vessel disguised as an apartment above them. After these events, Craig and Sophie formed a relationship together.

In the 2011 episode titled “Closing Time,” the Eleventh Doctor meets up with the couple, and Craig steps into the role of companion once more. However, this time, he’s not just a companion – he’s a doting father to his newborn son Alfie alongside his partner Sophie. Working together, they manage to thwart a danger posed by the Cybermen.

Clara Oswald

Who plays Clara Oswald? Jenna Coleman.

First Occurrence: Asylum of the Daleks, appearing as Oswin Oswald; The Snowmen, appearing as Clara Oswin Oswald; Deep Breath, appearing as simply Clara Oswald.

Last appearance: Hell Bent (regular), Twice Upon a Time (guest)

2012’s opening episode of Asylum of the Daleks featured the Eleventh Doctor encountering a sharp-witted human space voyager named Oswin Oswald (Jenna Coleman). This character, initially human, was later converted into a Dalek. In the end, it was Oswin who assisted the Doctor, along with Amy and Rory, in their escape from the planet of the Daleks’ Asylum. However, this act of bravery cost her own life.

In the 2012 Christmas special titled “The Snowmen,” the Doctor encountered a second version of Clara Oswin Oswald (also known as Coleman), who was both a Victorian governess and barmaid. She assisted him in overcoming the Great Intelligence, ultimately sacrificing her life for this cause.

In a 2013 episode titled “The Bells of St. John,” a new version of the character Clara Oswald (played by Coleman) was presented as a school teacher. This introduction came after she had received the Doctor’s contact information from an enigmatic woman, who was later unveiled as Missy, the female form of The Master. Clara assisted the Doctor during his current escapade. Perplexed by the riddle of Clara being “the Impossible Girl,” the Doctor extended an invitation for her to embark on his time-traveling journeys with him.

In time, Clara makes a selfless move to rescue the Doctor, merging herself with his timeline which resulted in various versions of Clara popping up at different points across the Doctor’s existence, helping him escape danger repeatedly. Later on, the Doctor manages to revive and restore Clara back to life.

Clara forms a deep, romantic connection with the Doctor, and stays by his side during his transformation into the Twelfth Doctor (played by Peter Capaldi). Initially, she’s wary of this new version of him.

In spite of many obstacles and ethical dilemmas arising from Danny Pink’s demise and their complex relationship, Clara stayed with the Doctor up until her own passing in the 2015 episode “Face the Raven.

In the 2015 season finale Hell Bent, the Doctor employs Gallifreyan tech to save Clara from her imminent death by extracting her from those very moments. Yet, it’s Ashildr, an eternal being (played by Maisie Williams), who enlightens the Doctor about their perilous union as ‘The Hybrid’. This partnership, it seems, causes more trouble than peace.

When the Doctor attempts to erase Clara’s memories of him, she counters this action by making him forget her instead. Subsequently, Clara prepares herself to revisit Gallifrey and confront her impending death, yet she plans to embark on countless journeys across time and space, accompanied by Ashildr, in a TARDIS they’ve stolen together.

In the 2017 holiday special Twice Upon a Time, Jenna Coleman once more plays Clara, reminding the Twelfth Doctor of their shared past as he regains memories of her just prior to his regeneration. A representation of Clara then advises him not to forget her again.

Nardole

Who plays Nardole? Matt Lucas.

First appearance: The Return of Doctor Mysterio

Last appearance: The Doctor Falls (regular), Twice Upon a Time (guest)

In the 2015 Christmas special titled ‘The Husbands of River Song’, I was intrigued by a unique character named Nardole, who happened to be a humanoid alien-cyborg. Later on, in the 2016 Christmas special ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’, I had the pleasure of seeing him as a companion to the Twelfth Doctor, making my sci-fi adventure even more captivating!

In the 2017 season, Nardole functions as a secondary travel partner for the Doctor, remaining so until the two-part finale “World Enough and Time” and “The Doctor Falls.” In these episodes, he sacrifices staying with the Doctor to guide humans to safety amidst the onslaught of the Cybermen.

In the magical 2017 Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time, I, a dedicated Whovian, find myself making an unexpected return as the embodiment of the Doctor’s past memories. Before the magnificent Twelfth Doctor embarks on his regeneration, I take a moment to bid him a heartfelt farewell.

Bill Potts

Who plays Bill Potts? Pearl Mackie.

First appearance: The Pilot

Last appearance: Twice Upon a Time

In the 2017 season opener titled “The Pilot,” Bill Potts, a student left without family, is introduced. Rapidly, she forms an alliance with her university professor, who happens to be The Twelfth Doctor, after her girlfriend Heather transforms into an alien substance that traverses through space and time, leaving no trace behind.

During the 2017 season, it was Bill who accompanied the Doctor on their journey through different times and locations. This continued all the way up to the final episodes titled “World Enough and Time” and “The Doctor Falls.” In these episodes, Bill tragically undergoes a traumatic transformation into a Cyberman.

After the Doctor seems to have perished, Nardole departs to save Earth-bound humans. Meanwhile, Bill is rescued from hopelessness as Heather reappears and converts her into a form similar to hers. Eventually, Bill brings the Doctor’s body back to Earth, then embarks on further cosmic travels with Heather.

In the 2017 holiday special, Twice Upon a Time, actress Pearl Mackie once again takes on the role she played earlier – a sentient representation of Bill’s memories that were gathered following her death. This new incarnation of Bill meets up with the Twelfth Doctor and assists him in acknowledging his transformation into the Thirteenth Doctor.

Graham O’Brien
