Scream 7 Adds Yellowstone Franchise Star (But They Might Create a Plot Hole)

As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise who’s followed its twists and turns for decades, I must confess that the casting of Isabel May as Sidney Prescott’s daughter has left me with a sense of both excitement and confusion. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see an actress of her caliber join the franchise; on the other, her role seems to create a significant timeline contradiction.

The rising talent Isabel May, famous for her roles in the prequels to Yellowstone titled 1883 and 1923, has been chosen to play Sidney Prescott’s daughter in Scream 7, as reported by Deadline. Although it’s thrilling to see an actress of this stature joining the franchise, her character introduction introduces a substantial timeline inconsistency.

2022 saw me revisiting the chilling world of “SCREAM” once more, with Neve Campbell gracefully stepping back into the shoes of Sidney Prescott. This time around, we discover that after enduring Ghostface’s terror in no less than four separate incidents, Sidney finally found solace in marrying Detective Mark Kincaid, played by Patrick Dempsey. Together, they welcomed two daughters, born between 2013 and 2015, and were still expecting their third child by the events of 2022.

It’s common for Scream movies to premiere in the same year they are produced, so fans anticipate Scream 7 to debut in 2026. However, the recent addition of May to the cast might suggest that the franchise is planning a significant time leap for its seventh installment. Although we calculate May’s character was born in 2013, she would be 13 years old by 2026. Hollywood often casts older actors as high school students, but it seems unlikely that a 24-year-old like May could convincingly portray a young teenager without causing noticeable inconsistencies.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to share an intriguing perspective on “Scream 7.” Instead of leaping into a time jump, how about introducing May as a secret daughter of Sidney? The franchise has a history of exploring enigmatic family ties, so this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary from a narrative standpoint. However, it does feel somewhat peculiar for Sidney to be pregnant, potentially have given birth to a child many years ago, and only now discover that her daughter survived. In my opinion, taking the time jump route might make for a smoother storyline, don’t you think?

Scream 7 Promises Going Back to the Franchise’s Roots

As a fervent admirer, I must share my thoughts on the evolution of “Scream 7”. The leading actresses, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who breathed life into the Carpenter sisters in the preceding films, parted ways with the project. Regrettably, Barrera’s departure was due to her social media comments concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict, while Ortega seemingly couldn’t reach an agreement with producer Spyglass. This series of events ultimately led to the resignation of director Christopher Landon, who later described his experience as a “dream job that morphed into a nightmare.

As a result of these departures, Spyglass has appointed Kevin Williamson as the director for the upcoming Scream movie. This is significant news given that Williamson wrote the first three and fourth Scream films. So, although Scream 7 will be Williamson’s directorial debut, his extensive understanding of these characters stretches back almost thirty years. Guy Busick, who co-wrote the fifth and sixth movies, continues to be involved in writing the script, which was developed with James Vanderbilt from a story concept.

After a significant change in the movie’s plotline, talks ensued with Neve Campbell, whose decision to skip Scream VI due to a payment disagreement left numerous fans disheartened. However, an understanding has been reached between the actress and the studio, with her expressing satisfaction with their revised strategy, stating they “listened when she discussed pay imbalance.” The takeaway is that studios should not underestimate the value of actors who have contributed to their franchise’s success by ensuring fair compensation.

The show is currently putting together a cast focusing on the Prescott family relationships, and Dempsey might reprise his role as Mark Kincaid, Sidney’s husband; however, he has mentioned that his decision is still up in the air based on the script. At this point, it’s still undecided if Courteney Cox will return as Gale Weathers, as discussions are ongoing, and no official announcement has been made yet.
