As a die-hard Beatles fan, I’m no stranger to “Eight Days a Week,” as Tedeschi candidly admits during our virtual chat from his hometown Brooklyn. The sentiment was palpable: ‘What more can be done now?’ However, “Beatles ’64” is so uniquely tied to New York City, where much of the footage was captured. We knew that the Maysles brothers had always been intrigued by the fans, but they had never truly spotlighted them before in any other version. So, in a way, it all came together rather swiftly. This film offers a unique, fan-centric perspective on Beatlemania – a frozen moment in time during those frosty New York streets that captures a Beatles experience like never before.

Initially, let’s establish some facts. The person referred to as “Marty” is actually Martin Scorsese, a renowned film director who has collaborated with Tedeschi on documentaries such as “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan”, “Shine a Light” featuring the Rolling Stones, and “George Harrison: Living in the Material World”. This isn’t their first collaboration to create a documentary about popular musicians, including the Beatles.

During this period, the Maysles referenced were Albert and David Maysles, a pair of documentary-making siblings who became an integral part of the Beatles’ lives from their arrival at JFK airport. Their footage forms the majority of the movie, which begins during a specific moment of darkness in American history.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the profound impact the Kennedy assassination had on our society. Just a few months prior, JFK was tragically taken from us, and it seemed as though our nation had lost its spark of optimism. However, the Beatles’ arrival couldn’t have been more perfectly timed to provide an uplifting antidote. As Paul McCartney explains in the documentary, “You can see in these audiences that they are being lifted out of sorrow.” Indeed, their music served as a beacon of hope and joy during a time when we needed it most.

I believe I read that in ’62, The Beatles covered a Motown song (‘Please Mr. Postman’ on the BBC’s ‘Teenagers Turn’), which marked the first time a Motown song was played on British radio.
