Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Is Getting a Sequel Anime & New Games

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting world of video games, I can wholeheartedly say that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has easily become one of my favorite hidden gems. Having played through the original game in 2020, I was absolutely captivated by its unique blend of action RPG and farming simulator elements, which offered an engaging and refreshing experience that set it apart from other games in the genre.

Four years on, the game “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” is back with a fresh spin-off and an accompanying anime series, as confirmed by Sakuna Studios themselves. First released in 2020, “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” was developed by Edelwiess and distributed by Marvelous. The game stands out as an action RPG where players step into the shoes of Princess Sakuna, a deity assigned to investigate and dwell on the enigmatic Island of Demons, aiming to control the demon population while nurturing a small human settlement. Much like another Marvelous title, “Rune Factory”, “Sakuna” provides its players with a multi-faceted gameplay experience, switching between intense hack-and-slash combat and relaxing farming simulations.

The upcoming game, titled “Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation”, centers around Princess Kokorowa, a confidante of Goddess Sakuna. Edelweiss has also revealed plans for an unnamed mobile game within the franchise as well as a new anime series. The initial anime adaptation, produced by P.A. Works in July 2024, consisted of 13 episodes and was directed by Masayuki Yoshihara with writing from Jukki Hanada. However, it’s yet to be determined if the same team will work on Season 2.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Is a Dark Horse In Anime & Gaming

As a passionate fan, I can attest that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, although it seemed like a lesser-known franchise at first, turned out to be a blockbuster hit when it debuted in 2020, with its popularity soaring even higher in 2024 upon the release of its official anime adaptation. The game received mostly favorable reviews and managed to sell an impressive 850,000 units from its launch up until January 2021, and by June that year, it had surpassed one million copies sold. The anime, while notorious for underperforming in the eyes of audiences with game adaptations, garnered decent reviews. Despite this reputation, the first season of the Sakuna anime has a rating of 6.74 on MyAnimeList. Yet, many positive reviews suggest that the anime immersed them beautifully in the world of Sakuna and left them eager to explore the source material themselves.
