One Dune Star’s Comments About Appearing in Messiah Should Have Denis Villeneuve Worried

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for sci-fi masterpieces, I must say that Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune films have left me utterly spellbound. The way he has brought Frank Herbert’s intricate world to life is nothing short of extraordinary. Now, hearing Javier Bardem express his desire to reprise his role as Stilgar in the potential third film, well, it warms my heart like a stillsuit in the desert sands of Arrakis.

The Dune series by Frank Herbert has gained significant popularity. For years, the science fiction novels have been cherished by genre enthusiasts, but Denis Villeneuve’s dual-film adaptation of the first book has introduced the tale of the Atreides and the Imperium to a broader audience. Villeneuve has hinted at plans for adapting Dune Messiah, the second book in the series. While the director hasn’t discussed personally adapting the entire series, if the third Dune movie fares well, it seems likely that more will follow. However, Villeneuve isn’t the only Dune collaborator discussing a potential third film. In a recent interview with Variety about his upcoming animated film Spellbound, Bardem playfully threatened to travel to Canada to locate Villeneuve if his character Stilgar is not featured in the movie.

When queried about his part in the upcoming movie, Bardem playfully commented, “Since I’m in the book, I expect to be in the script too. If not, I’ll certainly express my displeasure and let him know. I might even head to Canada.” However, more seriously, he shared, “I have immense respect for him. I truly admire him. Whatever his wishes or decisions are, I will wholeheartedly support them. Of course! He’s unique, exceptional, a remarkable human being, full of love, humor, and hard work.

Bardem also talked about watching Dune Part II with his son, saying, “When he saw Dune 2, he stood up in the theater and said, ‘That’s my dad.’ But then at the end, he said, ‘But you haven’t had any sword fighting.’ So now I have another demand for Denis Villeneuve. If there is such a thing as Dune: Messiah, please give me just a little sword fighting that I can show it to my kid.”

In the books, Stilgar is well-known as the most formidable among the Fremen of Sietch Tabr, prior to Paul’s arrival. However, rather than focusing on action scenes, Herbert chose to delve deeper into personal, political, and ecological themes, resulting in readers having a less tangible understanding of Stilgar’s actions.

In the sequel titled Dune Messiah, the story leaps forward from the initial novel, unfolding after Paul Atreides and the Fremen’s uprising to seize control over the Imperium. This power struggle resulted in the tragic loss of 61 billion lives, the sterilization of 90 planets, and the extinction of 40 distinct religions, among which Stilgar was a part.

It seems that Villeneuve has discussed the time jump, which means unfortunately, Bardem’s on-screen son may be left feeling let down.
