The TMNT Are Getting Dark Turtle Doppelgangers (and There Are Already Toys)

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia and a shelf adorned with countless Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures from my childhood, I must say that the recent developments in the TMNT universe have left me absolutely turtle-y delighted! The 40th anniversary celebration is not just a mere milestone, but a testament to the enduring appeal of these green heroes.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is among the most venerable franchises in history. The Turtles are celebrating their 40-year anniversary, and are having something of a renaissance. 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was a huge hit with fans, with an animated series follow-up on Paramount+. IDW has gotten big name comic creators — Jason Aaron, Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Cliff Chiang, Chris Burnham, and Darick Robertson — for their new books. TMNT: The Last Ronin was a massive hit, spawning sequels and spinoffs. Things are going pretty great for the line, and now they’re getting dark doppelgangers from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures, a comic that continues the classic TMNT cartoon of the late ’80s/early ’90s. These dark doppelgangers were co-designed by NECA, a high-end action figure producer, and there’s already a Dark Leonardo prototype.

The cartoon series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures” brings back fond memories, and the introduction of sinister counterparts to the turtle crew aligns perfectly with the show’s distinctive style. Reminiscent of many ’80s children’s shows, the original program essentially functioned as a marketing tool for action figures. It’s interesting to note that an action figure company was also involved in creating the designs, mirroring the approach taken by the original toy manufacturer, PlayMates. NECA’s involvement attests to the design quality – NECA is renowned for producing high-quality toys. The images of Dark Leonardo are impressive and sure to delight many Turtles fans.

This action figure blends the timeless aesthetics of vintage PlayMates figures with the superior craftsmanship NECA is renowned for. It’s an outstanding toy overall. In addition, NECA is currently developing the dark counterparts of the rest of the team. NECA’s Brand Manager, Blain Rodenbaugh, shared the origin of this concept with IGN, explaining that their TMNT Brand Manager, Trevor Zammit, collaborated with concept artist Jason Yang to create a pitch deck featuring potential alternate characters for IDW. They chose NECA’s Dark Leo design, which imagined a world where Leonardo had joined the Foot Clan. With only one concept per character, the real collaboration started when IDW artist Sarah Myer created dark appearances for the remaining team members, and Erik Burnham developed a storyline that aligned with the Saturday Morning Adventures comic.

Right now, TMNT enthusiasts are in for a treat! There’s an array of exciting collaborations on the horizon, a captivating animated show inspired by a classic film, and comic books catering to fans of all ages – from young children to those who grew up with the turtles. The introduction of their dark counterparts promises intriguing narratives and stunning action figures.

I’m super pumped to jump into action in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures” #20, penned by Erik Burnham and Sarah Myer, hitting the shelves on January 8th, 2025! Can’t wait!
