Krampus Brings Frights for Christmas in Dread the Halls (Exclusive)

As a connoisseur of all things spooky and seasonal, I can hardly contain my excitement for Syzygy Publishing’s upcoming one-shot, Dread the Halls! Having grown up hearing tales of Krampus from my European relatives, the prospect of a comic that combines this terrifying figure with the horror elements of Christmas Eve is absolutely thrilling.

Christmas is often associated with snowmen, caroling, and presents under the tree, but this year, Syzygy Publishing is adding a chilling twist to the holiday season. Today we’re giving you an early peek at a new one-shot titled “Dread the Halls,” which will offer four spine-tingling tales from the talented team of Jordan Hart (Ripple Effects, The Cabinet), Chris Ryall (Zombies vs. Robots), Lee Ferguson (Gone Fishing), Jimmy Kucaj (Krampus Hunters), Walter Pax (Northerners), and Fabio Veras (Dead Notes). This chilling read is set to be available in stores by early December. Take a sneak peek at the new one-shot right from Krampus’ workshop in the gallery below, and grab your copy when it lands on comic store shelves on December 4th.

Hart shared that the source of his tales was inspired by his grandmother, and when coupled with his aspiration to create a Krampus story, it formed a perfect union. “As a displaced individual post World War II, my grandmother traveled extensively throughout Europe,” Hart explained. “One of her final destinations before emigrating to America was a tiny Bavarian town where two villagers dressed up as St. Nicholas and Krampus, going from house to house to assess each child’s behavior.

Based on her recounting of that night, I’ve been inspired to pen a Krampus tale where children take a stand. This spring, at C2E2, I met Jimmy Kucaj and realized his dynamic art style and aptitude for action sequences would brilliantly bring this concept to life. His innovative ideas, creativity, and talent transformed my initial rough idea into something truly remarkable.

“Dread the Halls is our gift to everyone who might expect to see their name on Santa’s Naughty List, although anyone on the ‘Nice List’ who like their holiday season to have some added spice is invited to partake, too,” Ryall said. “As a comic reader, I’ve always loved comic-book stories that fuse elements of Halloween and Christmas together in sweet and scary ways, and that’s what we set out to do here as well.” You can find the official description of Dread the Halls below.
