Kendrick Lamar Addresses Super Bowl Halftime Show Controversy on GNX

As a dedicated follower of hip-hop culture for over two decades, I must say the recent lyrics from Kendrick Lamar on his new album GNX have struck a chord with me. The controversy surrounding his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance and Lil Wayne’s perceived snub has been brewing for quite some time now, and it’s interesting to see how both artists are addressing the situation through their music.

Kendrick Lamar is rapping about some bad blood.

The unexpected release on November 22 of his sixth album, titled GNX, saw the rap artist “Not Like Us” discuss the ongoing debate about his planned performance at the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

It was announced in September that Kendrick would be the main performer, but many fans expected rapper Lil Wayne to be selected instead since the event was taking place at Caesars Superdome, which is in Lil Wayne’s hometown of New Orleans. Surprisingly, Lil Wayne seemed disappointed about not being chosen, stating on Instagram that he felt hurt and blamed himself for not being mentally prepared for a potential disappointment and for automatically assuming he would be selected.

In the track “wacced out murals,” Kendrick Lamar subtly referred to a situation by rapping, “I used to play Tha Carter III with my Rolex chain held high / Ironically, it seems that my hard work might have let Lil Wayne down / Yet, despite this, label me as eccentric, everyone is questioning / Push me towards being an ‘Esk—‘, I drew a line and made my stand.

Furthermore, he clarified the dispute more precisely in the subsequent line, stating that only a small number of his musical peers had extended their support to him.

“I was the one who won the Super Bowl and only Nas gave his congratulations. Many others were agitated but at least they showed up. To be honest, there are many artists out there, but they seem outdated with their old-fashioned flows, trying to convince me that they’re my favorite. This isn’t about the lyrics; I swear it’s not the sentiment.

Kendrick Lamar will perform at the Super Bowl for a second time. He’s joining headliners Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige for the 2022 Halftime Show.

When it was revealed that the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper would make a comeback on the NFL’s main stage earlier this year, he spoke to TopMob News, saying, “Rap music remains the most influential genre currently. I’m looking forward to reminding the world of this fact.

Despite not making a public statement about Kendrick’s track, it’s worth mentioning that Lil Wayne earlier expressed his disappointment over not being selected to perform at the 2025 Super Bowl, stating that it left him feeling quite low.

The artist behind “Love Me” expressed his disappointment to fans in an Instagram post, saying he felt as though he had let everyone down by missing out on that opportunity. However, he emphasized that he is focusing on self-improvement and continuing to work hard. He also extended his gratitude to his supporters.
