As a lifelong fan of The Wizard of Oz and its enchanting world, I was absolutely thrilled to witness the creative brilliance of Jon M Chu in his adaptation of Wicked. His masterful touch has not only breathed new life into the beloved characters but also subtly woven in references that pay homage to the original film and even delve deeper into the rich history behind L. Frank Baum’s iconic novel.
As a movie connoisseur, it’s clear as day that the captivating spectacle, Wicked, carries an undeniable connection with The Wizard of Oz. Consequently, it comes as no shock that the visionary director, Jon M Chu, strategically incorporated a few subtle visual nods to the timeless 1939 cinematic gem in his fresh and critically acclaimed musical rendition.
As a passionate movie buff, I’ve just watched this captivating film that delves into the background of the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, much like its stage counterpart did before it. It offers a fresh perspective on the timeless antagonist who once struck fear in the heart of Dorothy, giving us a revised interpretation of the classic villain as portrayed by Victor Fleming in his iconic film.
“Of course, Wizard of Oz has such a place in our hearts of how we see story, how we see the world.”
As a follower, I noticed intricate details that subtly hinted at future character developments, even in minor aspects such as costumes or entry poses. For instance, Fiyero casually leaning against two poles upon his first entrance could be seen as a nod to something more significant, if you’re familiar with the story. These subtle references are sprinkled throughout the production, adding depth and excitement for those in the know.
In other words, Chu continued to clarify that some of the details in the movie actually date back before the 1939 film itself, as they were borrowed from the real life of L. Frank Baum – the creator of the famous book that inspired the original movie.
Before composing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, he raised ornate fowl, specifically show chickens, as he put it. In the Ozdesk Ballroom scene, we have these peculiar Ozian chickens playing a piano instead.
To make our work as faithful as possible, we aimed to draw inspiration from various aspects of the original book, including the W.W. Denslow illustrations. We wanted to incorporate animals similar to those found in those books and adopt a design style reminiscent of the drawings. Consequently, we subtly incorporated some of these elements throughout our work.
