White Light
As a seasoned gamer who’s been following the Green Lantern saga since the days of Kyle Rayner’s debut, I must say that this latest turn of events has me both intrigued and excited! The return of White Light is not just a power-up for our favorite space cop, but a beacon of hope in these dark times.
As I delve into Green Lantern #17, it feels like the odds are stacked against our rebel force. Not only does Thaaros miraculously survive, but his power level soars due to the Dark Star Ring. That’s not all; Varron, who was already a formidable adversary, has become one of the most potent forces within our sphere, thanks to the new ring he now possesses. This Source Lantern grants him access to untapped cosmic energy, making him even more dangerous than before.
In the course of his investigations on Keli Quintela following her capture, Thaaros and his team worked tirelessly to decipher the secret behind her gauntlet’s link to the Source Lantern and how to tap into that power. After much trial and error, they managed to replicate this connection by crafting a new ring. However, before he could use it, Thaaros was unable to claim the ring for himself.
An Epic Return
This action occurred because Varron seized the ring and unlocked a passageway to the Source Lantern, aiming to seize its power personally. When Varron did this, Kyle Rayner felt it and exclaimed “The Spectrum…it…it’s been compromised. He’ll wipe it out completely! I must intervene! I must preserve the spectrum!” He subsequently transformed from his Green Lantern identity into his White Lantern form, flying upwards towards the breach, which was observed by Hal and the other Lanterns.
Pursued by them, he declares, “I must rectify this situation. I can perceive it. This seems to be my fate.” Then, he soars past the boundary. From a cosmic perspective, Thaaros confirms Rayner’s demise and warns, “And you will follow him soon…so prophesies the Dark Star.” Although this might cause discomfort, rest assured that the following page clarifies that Kyle Rayner is indeed alive, and things become even more intriguing from then on.
On the page, Rayner lies on the ground below as it appears that numerous energy entities clash with Varron overhead. These entities emit a bright white light and exude an aura reminiscent of Guardians. With energy whirling around him, Rayner mutters “My…destiny…”. If you’ve been following Rayner’s background, this could be another instance where his role as the Torchbearer might surface once more.
Previously, Rayner has assumed other potent roles, such as his tenure as Ion, yet none can match the might of a White Lantern. Kyle’s white light prowess enables him to control every aspect of the emotional spectrum, thus he can summon the abilities of each of the other Corps whenever he wishes. Initially, Rayner alone yielded the white light, but later he divided the power among several entities, though he retains the capacity to reassemble them should a specific scenario necessitate it.
In a sense, it’s tough not to view this as one of those critical moments. Now, with Rayner summoning his most powerful form, he’s stepping up to aid the Lanterns and the DC Universe during their time of crisis.
