Clay Aiken Shares What He’s Like as a Dad to 16-Year-Old Parker

As a dedicated follower of Clay Aiken‘s journey for over two decades, I admire his dedication to maintaining a normal, private life for his 16-year-old son Parker. Despite being in the public eye since his American Idol days, he has managed to keep his family away from the limelight, which is quite an achievement.

For Clay Aiken, parenting is one space in life he finds safe.

For over two decades, the former contestant from American Idol has maintained a relatively private life with his 16-year-old son, Parker Aiken, whom he shares with friend Jaymes Foster. However, he’s recently shared insights about his approach to parenthood.

In a unique interview with TopMob News, the finalist from season two explained, “In essence, I’m just a person who handles challenges well. I value constructive feedback as it helps me identify areas where I can improve.

That said, Aiken is proud of how he was able to give Parker a sense of normalcy.

For sixteen years, I’ve been diligently ensuring his privacy, and I believe we’ve done an exceptional job, making him virtually unseen by the public – a testament to our dedication. My primary goal was to allow him the opportunity to experience as normal a life as possible, away from the limelight.

The family made one allowance, letting Parker join in on Celebrity Family Feud in August.

Aiken mentioned that it was the first occasion for his son to appear. He’s grateful that he’s had an ordinary, or as typical as possible, upbringing,” Aiken stated.

Personally, I’ve been pondering over the question of whether Parker might tread the same path as his father. However, from what I’ve gathered, he seems to be carving out a distinct path for himself at the age of 45, and it doesn’t appear that he’s planning on following in his dad’s footsteps, at least not in the way we might expect.

Aiken playfully noted, gesturing towards Parker’s relative, the renowned producer David Foster and his aunt Katharine McPhee who are both deeply involved in music. “He has a clear idea of his path,” he said. “He’ll take a unique route.

He added, “I’m proud of him. I’m thrilled for him. He can sing, though, he just doesn’t want to.”

Speaking of Aiken, he’s back with his inaugural holiday album in over a decade titled “Christmas Bells Are Ringing“. Interestingly, the development of this project can be attributed to Parker’s upbringing.

He shared that it felt appropriate for him to return to music and singing in particular, because he felt the moment was right. Previously, he had stepped back to focus on being a father as his child was growing up, and he wanted to be present during this important stage of their life.

Regarding the Aiken family’s holiday customs, the former Idol contestant mentioned that they are much like any other family during the festive Christmas period.

He expressed that our tradition might not be so unique compared to many other families, as it essentially revolves around the seasonal gathering. You may only get to meet some of your cousins during this period, right? It’s the one occasion when you can ensure everyone gathers and enjoy that sense of safety and familiarity.

Christmas Bells Are Ringing is available Nov. 22.
