Spider-Man Director’s Apple TV+ Movie Not Getting Sequel (Despite Initial Greenlight)

As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more movies than I care to count, I must admit that the cancellation of the Wolfs sequel leaves me somewhat disheartened. Having witnessed the electrifying chemistry between George Clooney and Brad Pitt in this action-comedy gem, I was eagerly anticipating another installment. The original film, despite a few plot hiccups, was a delightful ride that showcased the duo’s undeniable on-screen magic.

It appears that the upcoming sequel to director Jon Watts’ action-comedy “Wolfs,” which we were anticipating, is no longer in the works. In an interview with Collider, the filmmaker expressed uncertainty about a follow-up, and this doubt was later validated by Deadline. Unfortunately, the reason for the movie’s cancellation remains unclear.

Watts shared with Collider that he’s undecided about his next project and doesn’t foresee a continuation of the ‘Wolves’ series.

Featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, the film “Wolfs” focuses on two independent fixers compelled to collaborate for a challenging task. At first, Apple TV+ planned a broad cinema release, but later opted for a limited screening instead. Following its debut at the Venice Film Festival, “Wolfs” graced the big screen from late September 22nd until the 28th, before becoming available on streaming on the 27th. The movie garnered generally favorable reviews, with many compliments going to Clooney and Pitt’s convincing on-screen camaraderie.

Previously, in August, even before the premiere of “Wolfs”, a sequel was announced. It appeared that Apple was eager to develop this heist story into a series, hinting that “Wolfs” would “stir up audiences for what’s coming next.” However, the choice to change direction is puzzling, given that “Wolfs” swiftly climbed to become Apple TV+’s most-watched movie ever.

Given the audience’s interest in the original film and the chemistry between Pitt and Clooney, it seems reasonable to infer that the decision to abandon Wolfs 2 wasn’t primarily driven by its performance. Although the first movie received some plot-related criticism, viewers found enjoyment in watching the two stars interact. It’s intriguing to speculate about how the creative team could have built upon the initial film’s foundation. It appears that Wolfs 2 might not be happening because Watts prefers to focus on a fresh idea rather than revisiting the same theme again. This decision may stem from his desire to return to his unique storytelling approach, as evidenced by his move away from Marvel after three Spider-Man movies, and his likely eagerness to delve into other creative concepts.

It’s intriguing to anticipate what project Watts will tackle next, considering his hectic schedule over the past few years. Apart from the Spider-Man trilogy and “Wolfs,” he also co-created the Star Wars series “Skeleton Crew,” directing two out of eight episodes. Given his workload, it’s only fair that he takes a well-deserved break to recharge. With his impressive portfolio, there will undoubtedly be excitement for whatever idea he comes up with next.
