Bleach Voice Actor Hints at New Anime Wedding Scene in Revealing Interview

As a long-time fan of Bleach, I’ve seen it all – the Soul Society, the Hueco Mundo, and even the Sternritter. But the latest twist in the Thousand-Year Blood War anime has me more excited than ever! Renji and Rukia’s wedding is on the horizon, and it seems like it’s not just a manga-only event anymore.

In the anime adaptation of “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War,” there’s been an abundance of fresh content not present in the initial manga storyline. During the battle against Yhwach and the Wandenreich, characters like Renji and Ishida have been given more substantial storylines, such as a detailed confrontation between them in a recent episode. Regarding Renji, his voice actor, Kentaro Ito, shared some intriguing insights during an interview. Before the anime concludes, there could be an unexpected wedding scene introduced that wasn’t depicted in the original story.

In case you’re unfamiliar, characters Renji and Rukia from the anime “Bleach” eventually got married in a story written by creator Tite Kubo and writer Makoto Matsubara. Despite not appearing overly affectionate during the series, their wedding is detailed in the 2016 novel titled “Bleach: We DO Knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU“. This book takes place after the battle against the Sternritter and explores not only the rebuilding of the Soul Society but also delves into the relationship between these two significant allies of Ichigo’s.

Romances Blooms in The Blood War

In a recent conversation, Kentaro Ito, who voices Renji in the Bleach series, shared his thoughts about his role and picked out one of his favorite scenes. He questioned whether Renji’s feelings for Rukia had been present from the start, mentioning the scene where Renji exclaimed to Ichigo, “I know it will be a disgrace, but I’m asking you…!!”, which appears in Manga Volume 11, Chapter 98. Another cherished moment for him is the flashback scene where, after their time at “Dog Suspension,” Renji and Rukia promise to become Shinigami together in front of their friends’ graves (Manga Volume 11, Chapter 98). Since reading this scene in the original manga, Ito has eagerly awaited its animated portrayal. However, due to a female voice actor being cast as young Renji because of her powerful voice, he felt a twinge of excitement, thinking, “Could it be me in the scene where he makes his vow to Rukia…?” (laughs).

In his work on the audio transcription for “Bleach: We DO Knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU“, Ito noted that knowing or not knowing the ending significantly impacted his voice acting, especially during the Blood War. Until a decade ago with the original series, neither the audience nor he knew the outcome. This required careful consideration to ensure the voice expressions didn’t feel out of place when there was character development. However, in the “Thousand-Year Blood War Arc”, both the viewers and Ito are aware of the ending. Knowing the ending allows for working backwards to create the character. Yet, one aspect he consciously avoided considering was the relationship between Renji and Rukia (laughs).

Ito goes on to say, “When I came across that plot point in the manga, I couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘Really now!’ (laughs). Even while working on the audio for ”BLEACH WE DO KNOT ALWAYS LOVE YOU” on YouTube’s ‘Jump Channel’, I found myself questioning, ‘Could this impact my character development?’. However, it is our shared goal with Fumiko Orikasa to ensure that any romantic feelings between Renji and Rukia remain hidden until the final moments of the ‘Thousand-Year Blood War Arc’ (laughs).

Renji x Rukia’s Wedding is Coming

In his latest interview, Kentaro Ito hinted at an unseen wedding event from the manga finding its place in the anime version, “I trust you’re all appreciating the ‘Thousand-Year Blood War’ arc.
By using Renji Abarai as a character, I aim to express the time Renji spent and my unique perspective of the world of ‘BLEACH‘ . I invite you to continue this journey with me until the climactic scene between Renji and Rukia.

After the Thousand-Year Blood War, famed creator Tite Kubo is back in the supernatural shonen world with a special release titled “Bleach: No Breaths From Hell.” In this sequel, we meet Ichika Abarai, the spitting image of her parents Renji and Rukia. Although it hasn’t been definitively stated whether Bleach will return for more chapters, this one-shot has definitely hinted at possible future directions for the shonen series if Tite Kubo decides to reenter the manga world.
