New Doctor Who colourisation of classic story to reveal ‘lost’ regeneration

As a lifelong Whovian who vividly remembers the original broadcast of The War Games in 1969, this news is nothing short of exhilarating! I can still recall the terror of those Roman soldiers and the fascination with the glinting spectacles of the villains. Now, after half a century, we get to relive that experience with a modern touch.

Today marks Doctor Who Day, celebrating 61 years since the show first aired! In honor of this milestone, we have some thrilling news about a special re-telling of a classic storyline.

In 1969, the last adventure of the Second Doctor, portrayed by Patrick Troughton in “The War Games,” is being remastered. This includes colorization, improved visual and audio effects, as well as a fresh new musical theme.

Besides this, it’s worth noting that the revamped series will also delve into a missing aspect of Doctor Who lore: the transition from the Second Doctor (Timothy Dalton) to the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee). Although the regeneration occurred off-camera in the original series, The War Games special edition is set to showcase this transformation on-screen.

The upcoming release, set to air on BBC Four and accessible via BBC iPlayer, is said to include previously unseen footage from the original broadcast.

Right from when I resumed working on Doctor Who, this was our intention,” said showrunner Russell T Davies. “To add color to old episodes and breathe new life into them. And it’s fitting that on the day of Doctor Who, we can announce this, honoring the show’s rich history by releasing a timeless classic. It looks so vibrant and modern – and for those who prefer black-and-white, the original story will still be available on BBC iPlayer, ensuring everyone benefits!

I saw this broadcast back in 1969, when I was just six years old. I was both terrified by the Roman soldiers and captivated by villains with shimmering eyeglasses. The Doctor’s fresh origin left me spellbound. Now, both long-time fans and new ones can experience it all over again.

Originally, The War Games was a particularly lengthy episode of Doctor Who, spanning across 10 segments of 25 minutes each, making up a total of 4 hours. However, in its special edition, expertly edited by Benjamin Cook, it will be condensed into a more concise 90-minute viewing experience.

On the 23rd of December, 2024, a special edition of The War Games will be broadcasted on both BBC Four and BBC iPlayer. Meanwhile, you can catch up with Doctor Who anytime on BBC iPlayer.
