As a long-time Xbox gamer, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I bid farewell to one of my cherished memories – the Xbox Avatars. From the early days of Xbox Live on the original console, to the golden era of Xbox 360, and even up until the Xbox One and Series X, these digital characters have been a constant companion in my gaming journey.
Microsoft is discontinuing one of Xbox’s longest-standing features: Avatars. Since its inception, Xbox has been a trailblazer in console gaming online. Although it wasn’t the first to offer an online gaming service, Xbox truly mastered the concept with the original Xbox and further solidified it with Xbox 360. The debut of Xbox Live occurred just one year after the launch of the original Xbox, enabling players to engage in various online games using a microphone and maintaining contact lists to stay connected with their fellow gamers. This feature was groundbreaking at that time as home internet became more common and user-friendly, giving Xbox an edge over PlayStation 2, which also had its own online features but not to the extent of Xbox’s.
The Xbox 360 revolutionized gaming by introducing an updated version of Xbox Live, offering features like party chats for socializing with friends while playing different games, direct downloads of games and content onto the console, movie streaming, and more. Additionally, it provided a high level of personalization through gamer pictures, themes, and the introduction of avatars in 2008. These avatars allowed players to create digital characters that appeared on their profiles and even within certain video games like “1 vs 100“. Players could also watch Netflix together with their Avatars sitting in a virtual theater. What made it even more exciting was the ability to purchase items for your Avatar based on various games, enabling you to dress up as popular characters or sport merchandise from them.
Regrettably, Avatars have become less prominent on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, appearing only when you view your complete profile. They’re largely absent elsewhere in the Xbox ecosystem. The Avatar marketplace has seen a decline due to reduced focus, and the new Avatar editor with advanced customization options hasn’t received much attention either. A once cherished feature now seems overlooked, and unfortunately, it appears that part of it may be phased out.
Microsoft, through PureXbox, has announced that the Xbox Avatar Editor will be closing on January 9th, 2025. This means the demise of any new 3D avatars created after this date and all associated items for them. If you’ve bought items for these avatars after November 1st, 2023, rest assured, you will receive an automatic refund. The shutdown is due to “low engagement” with the app. However, Xbox encourages users to continue utilizing the Avatars from the Xbox 360 era instead. Microsoft aims to provide exceptional gaming experiences for users by offering multiple ways to customize their gameplay via Xbox. However, due to low usage and a change in our strategic direction towards other player-focused services, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will cease operation from January 9, 2025. Users can continue personalizing their gaming experience through dynamic backgrounds, profile colors on Xbox consoles, and using Xbox Original Avatars, profile themes, and gamerpics both on Xbox consoles and PCs.
For the near term, gamers can continue using their avatars, albeit disappointing to see this feature being phased out considering the current trend of personalized in-game characters. The closure is surprising, given the success of games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Roblox that capitalize on customizable skins. It appears Xbox has yet to fully leverage avatars, a move that seems unexpected in light of their potential popularity today. Whether Xbox will reinstate avatars with significant impact is uncertain at this point, but it’s possible they might explore a more metaverse-style environment in the future, where avatars could play a larger role.
