Doctor Who Christmas special unveils new teaser pictures of Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan

As a seasoned sci-fi enthusiast with a soft spot for the timeless charm of Doctor Who, let me share my thoughts on the latest revelations about the 2024 Christmas special, Joy to the World.

On Doctor Who Day, there’s been no shortage of fascinating revelations, and more keeps pouring in!

Anticipation for the 2024 Christmas special of the sci-fi series has been gradually growing, and now we’re treated to a burst of fresh sneak peeks from this year’s installment titled “Joy to the World.

The official Doctor Who X account posted some tantalizing previews, offering fans an early look at the upcoming adventures featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Nicola Coughlan as Joy.

Alongside the pictures shown on X, the BBC unveiled an eye-catching, appropriately holiday-themed promotional image for the upcoming episode (shown above). This image might hold some hints about what we can expect from the Christmas special.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and Mandip Gill’s Joy are nestled among a scene adorned with a Pompeii poster, a cheese toastie, a steaming coffee cup in a TARDIS mug, and a festive bauble. As the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without that last item, the significance of the other objects within the narrative remains to be unraveled, as we eagerly anticipate the unfolding storyline.

Christmas is nearly upon us – which one, you ask? Tune in to watch “JOY TO THE WORLD” on Christmas Day, broadcasted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and streaming on Disney+ where accessible.

Regarding the other photos posted by the official Doctor Who X account, we notice that the Doctor and Joy seem startled while examining what looks like an underground location, illuminated only by a torch. It’s unclear what they might encounter below ground, but their expressions suggest it’s something unexpected.

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’m thrilled about another sneak peek that hints at an intriguing encounter between Jonathan Aris’ character, Melnak the Silurian (armed with his briefcase), and the enigmatic Doctor. This tantalizing glimpse suggests they engage in a seemingly polite dialogue, all while poor Joy seems baffled by the turn of events.

In a sneak peek for the upcoming Christmas special, it was hinted that the Silurians would return, as Joy encountered one of these reptilian beings in her hotel room. Originating from a 1970 episode of Doctor Who titled “Doctor Who and the Silurians,” these humanoid creatures made their initial appearance then.

Although it’s uncertain yet where the Silurian fits within the episode’s narrative, we are certain about one thing: the character’s name is Melnak and he will be portrayed by the renowned actor, Aris, best known for his role in Sherlock.

Although specific plot points for the upcoming episode are currently being kept secret, there have been hints given throughout the process. Notably, this episode has been penned by Steven Moffat, a former showrunner of Doctor Who, who has recently provided some tantalizing glimpses into what we can expect in “Joy to the World.

When interviewed by BBC South East news, Moffat explained: “Consider a scenario in the distant future where a hotel company discovers time travel. If such a company possessed this ability, what would be their initial action? They would recognize they had an unprecedented chance to sell every unsold night at their hotels throughout history.
