Suits Spinoff Gets First Trailer (And Fans of the Original Will Love It)

As a hardcore Suits fan who’s been through the ups and downs of the original series, I must say I’m thrilled to see the return of my beloved characters in this spin-off, Suits: L.A. The first teaser has me hooked, reminding me so much of the classic opening sequence that I can almost hear the familiar strains of “Greenback Boogie.” The cast, the setting, and even Gabriel Macht’s signature monogrammed shirt sleeve—it’s like a dream come true.

If the initial trailer for Suits: L.A. feels oddly reminiscent, that’s precisely the intention. NBC’s fresh take on the original show intentionally echoes its predecessor, even replicating its renowned opening sequence and theme song. Accompanied by Ima Robot’s “Greenback Boogie,” the trailer displays stars Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, and Lex Scott Davis strolling through stunning Los Angeles locales, skillfully negotiating deals in stylish suits amidst breathtaking city vistas. The visual aesthetic intentionally resembles the opening credits from the latter seasons of the original program.

This spinoff focuses on Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York, who fifteen years ago partnered with his old friend, Stuart Lane (McDermitt) in Los Angeles, changing his life’s path. Their law firm primarily handles criminal and entertainment cases but is currently grappling with a critical juncture. The storyline gradually reveals the circumstances that prompted Ted to abandon everything and everyone dear to him for a fresh start.

In a delightful throwback, Gabriel Macht will once again embody Harvey Specter in a series of three episodes. Macht hinted at his comeback on Instagram, posting a video featuring Harvey’s distinctive monogrammed shirt sleeve and high-end footwear, with the caption, “When an old acquaintance needs help…it’s time to step up and set things straight.” Amell appeared to verify the guest spot by commenting, “The Bat-Signal indeed works!

The show, initially conceived by Aaron Korsh who is known for his work on Suits, additionally stars Bryan Greenberg, Troy Winbush, and Alice Lee. In the pilot episode, Victoria Mahoney takes the director’s chair, while David Bartis, Doug Liman, Gene Klein, Anton Cropper, Genevieve Sparling, Rick Muirragui, and Jon Cowan serve as executive producers.

The spinoff emerges as a result of growing enthusiasm for the franchise, sparked by the surprising popularity of the original show on streaming platforms in 2023. When the first eight seasons were made available on Netflix, ‘Suits’ topped Nielsen’s streaming rankings for several months consecutively. This success led to a cast reunion at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The initial series, airing from 2011 to 2019 on USA Network, featured Patrick J. Adams, Macht, Gina Torres, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman, and Meghan Markle, who later became the Duchess of Sussex. However, only the first eight seasons are available on other platforms; the final season is exclusive to Peacock.

The series is set to challenge character allegiances, intertwining workplace tension with individual struggles under high-pressure circumstances. It pays tribute to its forerunner while attempting to establish a unique presence within the glamorous legal landscape of Los Angeles. To safeguard his firm, Ted finds himself taking on a role he’s despised throughout his career, despite his reservations.

Suits: L.A. premieres February 23, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
