As a lifelong movie enthusiast who’s seen more than a few box office flops and hits, I must say that the early projections for “Kraven the Hunter” leave me feeling somewhat ambivalent. On one hand, it’s always exciting to see a new Marvel character come to life on the big screen, especially one as iconic as Kraven. On the other hand, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has had a bit of a rocky start this year, with “Madame Web” and “Venom: The Last Dance” underperforming at the box office.
Predictions for the opening weekend earnings of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ have been revealed, and sadly, it seems unlikely that the movie will top the list of highest-grossing films during this holiday season. As per Box Office Pro, the film is projected to earn approximately $20-25 million in domestic sales within its first three days. Compared to ‘Madame Web’s $15.3 million domestic opening earlier this year, this would still place it towards the lower end of Sony’s recent Marvel adaptations in terms of earnings.
If these predictions are accurate, the debut of Kraven the Hunter is expected to be smaller than Morbius’ opening ($39 million) and lag behind any of the Venom sequels. The October release of Venom: The Last Dance started off with a whopping $51 million in U.S. box office earnings.
2024 has been challenging for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe so far, with disappointing box office results. For instance, the film ‘Madame Web’ was a significant letdown, earning only $100.4 million globally, while its production budget was in the range of $80-$100 million. On the other hand, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ managed to hold the top spot for three consecutive weekends at the box office, but this success can be attributed to a lack of significant competition before the holiday season releases swamped the market. However, the third installment in the Venom series has been the least successful, suggesting that Sony’s interpretations of these characters are not resonating widely with audiences.
The creators of “Kraven the Hunter” acknowledge the response towards Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, but invite cinema audiences to watch the movie anyway. Director J.C. Chandor and actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson have shared that the influential “Kraven’s Last Hunt” narrative was a major influence as they aimed to develop an engaging storyline and character exploration.
The release date for Kraven the Hunter isn’t until December 13th, meaning these projected earnings might change as we get closer. If the film is well-liked and generates good buzz, it could surpass initial predictions and perform well at the box office. It’s true that Sony’s past performances with Marvel movies have been underwhelming, but director J.C. Chandor has a reputation for creating critically acclaimed films like A Most Violent Year and All is Lost. His work on Triple Frontier, an action movie for Netflix, also received positive reviews, showcasing his skill in handling genre-specific projects.
The success of the movie “Kraven the Hunter” at the box office will significantly rely on the performance of established hits like “Wicked”, “Gladiator II”, and “Moana 2”. If these films maintain their momentum, “Kraven the Hunter” could struggle to make an impact, especially when Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” enters the scene. While being an R-rated action movie gives “Kraven” a unique appeal as a counter-programming choice, the audience for such films might already be satiated by “Gladiator II”.
