Tony Khan Responds to the Creation of WWE’s ID Program

As a long-time fan with deep roots in the wrestling community, I find the advent of WWE ID intriguing and somewhat concerning. Having witnessed the rise of countless independent talents over the years, it’s heartening to see WWE taking an interest in the indie scene. However, the “right of refusal” policy could potentially create a monopoly, stifling the growth of other promotions like AEW and TNA.

Over the last several weeks, WWE has launched a new initiative called WWE ID, which is designed to discover promising independent wrestlers. The aim is to provide a route for these independents to build successful careers within WWE. However, it’s not certain yet how this might influence organizations like AEW and TNA. Rumors suggest that the contracts contain a “right of refusal” clause, which could potentially prevent talent from working in other companies under specific circumstances.

Tony Khan Says WWE ID Is “Something To Keep an Eye On”

During the AEW Full Gear press conference, AEW President Tony Khan expressed his opinions about the latest project.

Khan remarked, “I find it intriguing, but I’m unsure of its specific mechanics. It appears there’s an initial right of refusal involved, though we haven’t encountered any disputes as such. I believe it will influence the independent wrestling world in some manner. Over the years, we’ve had a fantastic journey here, welcoming young wrestlers into our fold. During the pandemic, AEW and their shows ‘AEW Dark’ and ‘Elevation’ proved to be the best platforms for independent wrestlers to secure work.

Regarding the impact on his future recruitment strategies, Khan anticipates carrying on with the practice of acquiring talent from independent leagues. However, he views WWE ID as simply a new approach or methodology in this regard.

In AEW, we’ve seen numerous talented wrestlers climb their way up from the indie circuit, signed notable free agents, and have a good number of original day-one talents. This blend is quite impressive. I anticipate that we will continue to recruit outstanding talent from the independent scene. I believe this approach is unique. It’s something worth monitoring. So far, it hasn’t caused significant conflicts, but I can see it shaping the indie wrestling world for sure. Keep an eye on it!

For approximately three weeks, the program has made around twenty individual stars more widely recognized by the public. Among them is Kylie Rae, a WWE veteran who accepted an offer; Freedom Ramsey, Jack Cartwheel, Jordan Oasis, and numerous others were also included.

Regarding AEW, they’ve recruited Bobby Lashley, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin who head The Hurt Syndicate, a powerful group that achieved notable victories during the recent pay-per-view event. There are rumors circulating about the potential debut of “Speedball” Mike Bailey, a wrestler previously associated with TNA.
