As a long-time fan of Iron Man and the Avengers, I am thoroughly excited about the upcoming West Coast Avengers series! The concept of redeeming villains and giving them a chance to prove their worth as heroes is both intriguing and thought-provoking. This new team, led by Iron Man and War Machine, seems like it will be a rollercoaster ride filled with action, drama, and perhaps even a few surprises.
40 years after the creation of the West Coast Avengers in the 1984 comic “West Coast Avengers” #1, this west-coast centered superhero team is getting a significant update. Renowned writers Gerry Duggan (“X-Men”) and Danny Kim (“Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance”) are leading the charge in a new series. The revamped West Coast division of the Avengers consists initially of Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Tigra, Wonder Man, and Iron Man II (who is secretly Jim Rhodes). Over time, they will be joined by Tony Stark (in his Silver Centurion armor) and Hank Pym, a founding member of the Avengers and creator of one of their arch-nemeses: Ultron.
For the first time since 2019, Iron Man and War Machine will assemble the new West Coast Avengers team. Joining them are Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Firestar (Angelica Jones), Blue Bolt (Chad Braxton) with his lightning powers, and the enigmatically rehabilitated supervillain Ultron. This group aims to provide a way for former adversaries to make amends.
However, while the new hero Ultron emerges, another villainous version of Ultron will go head-to-head with the West Coast Avengers in the initial storyline (a sneak peek is provided below).
2021 has seen redemption as a recurring theme on my mind, and it remains to be seen who will find their redemption on the West Coast. The story we’re about to unfold is an exciting action-packed adventure, but it also delves into the world of Ultron – one of my most ambitious Marvel stories yet. Previously, I had the privilege of crafting a chilling horror narrative surrounding Ultron and Pym, and this new tale features one of my cherished Marvel characters in one of my beloved legacy titles, set within a city that has been my home for so long. Keep an eye out for Danny Kim’s incredible work. Find your redemption in November amidst the vibrant cityscape of angels.
The first issue of “West Coast Avengers” (Volume 4), available starting November 27th, presents an interesting scenario where Ultron, instead of causing harm, rescues civilians from the clutches of a terrorist group known as the Sovereign Sons. In a surprising twist, when a woman mistakes Ultron for Iron Man, he clarifies his newfound benevolence by stating: “I’ve been on a path of change lately.
Stark mentions that the team isn’t typical, and if it proves successful, it could mean fewer foes for us to confront in the future, he notes, as he disclosed his covert efforts to establish the new West Coast Avengers with Rhodey in issue #20 of Duggan’s Invincible Iron Man. “Our latest ally is out there making a difference. Frankly, I never envisioned partnering up with someone like him,” Stark adds.
Meanwhile, drones attack Stark as he rummages through a storage unit from his last stint in Los Angeles. He finds a briefcase containing the silver-and-red Silver Centurion armor (which he famously wore during the Armor Wars storyline in the ’80s), but fans will have to wait until the issue hits stands to see Stark suit up in the throwback to Iron Man’s West Coast Avengers era.
The upcoming pages allude to the occurrences depicted in Spencer Ackerman and Julius Ohta’s “Iron Man” #1, where Justine Hammer assumed control of Stark’s magical armor known as mysterium, transforming into the new Iron Monger. After gaining power over his company, Roxxon and A.I.M., Stark’s adversaries inserted malicious software into his armor to initiate the Stark-Roxxon War. In response, the armored Avenger adopts a makeshift Iron Man suit for combat.

In a surprising twist, ULTRON RESURFACES…REDEEMED? A fresh group of Avengers, formed by Iron Man and War Machine, now includes former villains striving for redemption. The example they’re following is Ultron – an unlikely candidate for change, but he appears to be adhering to a righteous path thus far. However, can the triumph of one truly ensure the success of many? Spider-Woman and Firestar harbor their reservations. Is it possible that any deeds of heroism can truly wash away Ultron’s past transgressions?

Firestar, previously known as Flames Out, has officially joined the ranks of the West Coast Avengers. However, her intended role of mentoring reformed villains such as Ultron and Blue Bolt is put on hold when it’s revealed that she is in need of redemption herself. Her experiences with ORCHIS have left lasting wounds, causing her to be shunned. The West Coast Avengers now face the challenge of helping Firestar navigate her own path towards recovery.
