As a lifelong Whovian with memories of Christmases spent huddled around the television waiting for the Doctor to appear, the news that Steven Moffat might be returning to the Whoniverse beyond his upcoming Christmas special has me positively giddy with excitement. I’ve followed the series since its inception and have witnessed the Doctor regenerate more times than I can count, but Moffat’s unique take on the show always managed to surprise and delight me in equal measure.
Steven Moffat hints at potential future involvement in the Doctor Who universe, going beyond his upcoming Christmas episode.
On this upcoming Christmas Day, you can look forward to a holiday-themed episode featuring the Doctor, alongside Nicola Coughlan, entitled “Joy to the World”.
Before more previews from the BBC following the Christmas special, Moffat posted on X: “And here’s a little Christmas treat for you. It looks great. Will we meet again? This could be my final one – but haven’t I said that before?” (In simpler terms, Moffat hinted that this might be his last project following the Christmas special, but he has made similar claims in the past.)
After Doctor Who’s comeback this year, viewers were thoroughly amazed by “Boom”, a script written by Moffat, leading some to believe it might be the finale.
And here’s a touch of holiday cheer, it looks wonderful. I’ll catch up with you later on. Who knows, this might just be our final meeting – but when have I ever predicted the future? #wishingyouwell

It wasn’t until he verified that he had penned the 2024 Christmas special too, which brought his total scripts for the show to a impressive 50.
In that moment, he shared with TV Choice: “Perhaps I ought to begin it from an easy chair, ‘And here we are – number 50.’
However, I’m not part of the upcoming Doctor Who series next year. Other projects are on my horizon, which could potentially mean that I won’t be contributing to Doctor Who anymore in the future.
Upon reaching the end of “Joy to the World,” a fleeting thought crossed my mind: ‘Could this be my last moment?’ So if this is indeed number 50, I’m ready to accept it.
While he noted he may never write for Doctor Who again, his above tweet could suggest otherwise.
Fans will just have to wait and see!
Over the weekend, sneak peeks for “Joy to the World” were shared on the official Doctor Who X social media platform, giving viewers a glimpse of what’s in store for Christmas.
🎄 Here I am, eagerly counting down the days until Christmas! In the UK, you can catch “Joy to the World” on Doctor Who this festive season on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. For those with Disney+ subscriptions, it’s also available where accessible. Enjoy the magic of Christmas! 🎄

The specifics about the storyline for the Christmas special are tightly guarded secrets, yet Moffat has given us a hint regarding what we might anticipate.
In conversation with BBC South East news, Moffat shared this thought: “Consider a scenario set far into the future where a hotel group discovers time travel. What would be the initial action of such a hotel group if they possessed time travel? They’d understand they had an unprecedented chance to sell all the unbooked nights in their hotels across history.
