DC’s Justice League Unlimited Comic Pays Homage to the Animated Series

As a lifelong fan of the DC Animated Universe, I can wholeheartedly say that the revival of Justice League Unlimited is like a dream come true! The idea of Earth’s mightiest heroes, united under one banner and ready to tackle threats beyond their individual capabilities, has always been a captivating concept.

In the animated show titled “Justice League,” the DC Animated Universe brought together Earth’s mightiest heroes: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, and The Flash. Similar to their comic book counterparts, the Justice League in this series would evolve over time, with additional members joining in subsequent seasons such as Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Question, Huntress, Supergirl, and numerous others, as seen in “Justice League Unlimited.

In the “Initiation” episode premiere of Justice League Unlimited, Superman tells his fellow superheroes gathered at the JLA Watchtower, “Given our numbers, we’re not merely limited to extinguishing fires, be they literal or symbolic. We have the opportunity to take action, to make a genuine difference in the world. However, for us to do so effectively, we must work together and maintain organization.

As a gamer, I’ve got the exciting news that J’onn J’onnz has taken the lead in assembling our expanded Justice League squad! From Aquaman to Hawk and Dove, Vixen, Mr. Terrific, Doctor Fate, Booster Gold, and Captain Atom, we’re ready for action! Over three seasons and 39 episodes, we battled it out against various foes, but the series reached its climax when both heroes and villains worldwide united to save Earth from the ominous threat posed by Darkseid, whose menacing voice belonged to Michael Ironside. The invading forces of Apokolips were our ultimate challenge, and together, we fought tooth and nail to preserve our planet.

20 years after the events of “Absolute Power”, the story for “Justice League Unlimited” starts off in a similar fashion. Exactly 52 days following the conclusion of “Absolute Power”, where Oliver Queen proposed rebuilding the Justice League as a larger, more coordinated and proactive team, the first issue of “DC All In Special” unveiled the new Watchtower, the base for the Justice League Unlimited’s largest roster yet. The animated series “Justice League Unlimited” concluded with a battle to vanquish Darkseid, while the comic book version began by depicting Darkseid’s downfall.

In “Justice League Unlimited” episode 1, Red Tornado announces that the Justice League has been reborn with a fresh objective and innovative strategies. For the first time on Earth, all heroes are united as a formidable force of justice, collaborating seamlessly to quash disorder and wickedness quicker and more efficiently than ever before. Welcome to the JLU!

One key takeaway from “Absolute Power” is that the creators suggest this entire scenario might have been avoided if the Justice League had remained united and maintained regular communication with each other, as stated by Waid on DC.com. Consequently, it’s not about the traditional Justice League operating together but rather reaching out to everyone who possesses powers and wishes to join the team. This includes opportunities for the Justice Society, Titans, and of course, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will identify and tackle potential threats based on their nature. The expanded Justice League roster is so vast that it becomes nearly impossible to keep it organized, as Waid explained, with approximately 92 heroes being incarcerated at some point during “Absolute Power.” To manage such a large cast, he uses trading cards to visualize who’s in action wherever needed. Without this visual aid, it would be challenging to keep track of everyone involved. Dan enjoys working on these characters and appreciates the chance to draw them all, much like George Pérez, who aims to illustrate every character.
