As someone who has spent countless hours scrolling through social media trends, I must admit that the rise of “demure” as Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year truly caught my attention. The story of Jools Lebron and her viral TikTok video is nothing short of inspiring.
You see how Dictionary.com chooses its Word of the Year?
Extremely attentive and adorably charming. Interestingly, the online dictionary has chosen “demure” as its 2024 Word of the Year, gaining significant traction due to TikTok influencer Jools Lebron.
In a recent press release, it was noted that the term “demure” – previously known for its association with shyness and modesty – has evolved this year to encompass more refined and sophisticated styles of appearance and behavior. This change reflects a cultural shift in attitudes towards personal presentation as we move back towards face-to-face interactions after years of remote and hybrid work arrangements.
As an ardent admirer, I’d put it this way: “The shifting significance of it resonates with me deeply, providing a subtle yet powerful platform for understated assurance. It’s all about embracing humility and grace as deliberate, impactful decisions that speak volumes.
Additionally, Dictionary.com revealed a list of contenders, consisting of words such as “brainrot,” “brat,” “extreme weather,” and “Midwest niceness.
Since Jools’ August 5th TikTok post, there’s been an approximately 12-fold rise in the use of the term “Demure” across various digital media platforms, as verified by their website.
Unsurprisingly, this is due to the fact that the video – where Jools uttered the phrase “Very mindful, very demure” from within her car – has amassed almost 50 million views. Furthermore, it has sparked interest among celebrities, such as Lindsay Lohan, Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lopez, Penn Badgley, and Olivia Rodrigo, who have all attempted to replicate the trend.
The 31-year-old previously admitted she was shocked by how big the video had gotten.
She shared with TopMob News in August that she had never encountered a situation where an action she took online became a reality offline. Now, at the airport, she’s observing people using the word ‘demure’, without addressing her directly. Strangers are approaching her to take photos.
Apart from the affection she’s gained from fans, she underscored the profound impact the clip has had on her and her family’s life. She went on to say, “For the first time, I can ensure security for us, make wise decisions, and begin to address some of the wounds inflicted by my upbringing in poverty.
But just like any viral moment online, the reaction ultimately swayed both ways amid its peak.
Jools shared with TopMob, “It’s normal for things that become extremely popular or receive a great deal of focus to eventually lose their appeal for some people.
Even though Jools didn’t agree with the critical responses, she chose a very reserved reaction towards people who might view the phrase as being used excessively.
She pondered, “I get where they’re at, indeed. Yet, I believe this development has generally been beneficial. There will always be those who are critical – it’s just the way things are. However, I notice an overwhelming number of people uniting around it and appreciating what’s happening.
